Diving with Raggies in Algoa Bay

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUMfH7Y8qCA]Port Elizabeth offers excellent diving options both inside Algoa Bay as well as on the Wildside.  Although I haven't gone scuba diving for years, I really enjoyed it when I did.  When I first did a sea dive I really worried about encountering a shark.  But that was until I actually encountered one.  We were on one of the training dives inside Algoa Bay off Cape Recife somewhere when I spotted something biggish in the gully below us.  The dive…

Boardwalk fountains video

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aMuytsdCbE&w=500&h=400]We kick off 2016 with the first Video Friday post of the year and I chose one showing the Boardwalk Fountain Spectacular in it's full glory.  I couldn't find a video on YouTube showing last night's fireworks on the beachfront, but the fountains are just as good if not better.  The video is by LimeWave.

Pollok Beach wave pool time lapse

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ_089qMYVI&w=500&h=400]Seeing that yesterday was Christmas there was no Video Friday post.  I decided to not skip the video of the week though so here it is today.  How many of us didn't swim in the "wave pool" in front of Something Good at Pollok Beach when we were kids?  To think of it, I should take my kids there again.  The video is another time lapse by Dunkan Noakes.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9es0xoF9x3o&w=500&h=400]If you have never flown into Port Elizabeth, I have something for you today.  If you have flown into the city before I'm sure you'll still enjoy it.  This week's Video Friday post is a video by Angelo the Explorer shot out the window of the plane as he came in for a landing in Port Elizabeth.  It starts as the plane comes in from the east over Kings Beach, then Humewood and Forest Hill before touching down.

Why were African Penguins previously called Jackass Penguins?

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDzxivW5WnQ&w=500&h=400]The African Penguin used to be called the Jackass Penguin.  A strange name for a penguin.  But how did it get that name? It is because the African Penguin's call sounds like a braying donkey.  Right, so now we have established that they sound like a donkey, but why were they called Jackass?  Donkey's are also called Asses (the scientific name is Equus africanus Asinus) while a male donkey is called a Jack.  Hence Jackass.  Check out this video by…
