A reminder that we live in a wonderful world

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8WHKRzkCOY&w=500&h=400]We live in such a rush every day that most of us tend to forget what a beautiful world is out there.  Add to that all the bad news around and I think it becomes a case of people spending more time indoors "hiding out" than getting out there and experiencing nature.  Earth Day was celebrated on 22 April and I spotted this video on an Earth Day blog post on the Getaway blog.  How can I not use it in…

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lmKFTadTk8&w=500&h=400]With all the sad things going on in this beautiful country of ours I posted the following on Facebook yesterday and decided to repost it on the PEDP blog today.  I know its not Port Elizabeth being featured specifically, but it has all the relevance in the world to all of us.There has been many memorable speeches in history. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream", Winston Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches", Emmeline Pankhurst's "Freedom or Death" and…

Snorkeling with an otter in Schoenies

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CZRcQfR3DA&w=500&h=400]I found this video on YouTube posted in 2013 by Brad Taylor of him and his dad snorkeling in a gully in Schoenmakerskop.  To their surprise they were joined by an otter.  Now there's something that doesn't happen every day.

This giant South African flag packs a punch

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1ku-HPjTwg&w=500&h=400]After posting about the raising of the giant South African flag on the Donkin Reserve last week, I thought of a video I saw a little while ago of the flag being taken down on a day when the wind was pumping.  I found it and decided to post it for your pleasure this week.  Check our the Prince Alfred Guard soldiers struggling to get the flag under control.  More importantly, check the size of the flag. When it flies…

Ironman weekend in Port Elizabeth

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=680KMOnNfx4&w=500&h=400] It is Ironman weekend in Port Elizabeth and the buzz outside my office at the Boardwalk has been awesome over the last two days.  Tomorrow the day kicks off with the Corporate Challenge (or Corporate Ironman as everybody but the organisers like to call it) followed by Ironkids.  With Drama Princess taking part in the latter I will be down on the beachfront with my camera so look out for pictures on that in the coming week.  On Sunday morning…

Snorkeling at Sardinia Bay

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aayZEonJRjM?feature=player_embedded]I found this stunning video by Luke Kibble on YouTube.  It was shot with a GoPro on a snorkeling outing at Sardinia Bay.  Beautiful footage!  Think I need to go get the flippers wet before it starts to get too cold.

Dolphins during the Sardine Run

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REM0jFXWd30&w=500&h=400]The Sardine Run is one of South Africa's biggest annual natural events and takes place on the KZN coastline and the Wild Coast.  Very few people actually know that the sardines gather on the coastline off Port Elizabeth early in the year before they start their journey up the east coast.  Expert Tours is a marine tour operator that does tours to go and see the gathering of sardines along with the dolphins, sharks, whales, birds and other predators that follow and feed on…

A video postcard from Port Elizabeth

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJkPLS5HQy0&w=500&h=400]While looking for a video to post for today I found this video postcard by Hostelworld.  Its just over three minutes long and covers beaches, history, game reserves and a couple of general attractions around the city.  It's not an expensive and flashy production but really shows off what the city has to offer.  Something a lot more people aught to do.  Destination marketing should be something every tourism product and establishment in the city should be doing as tourists choose a…

Nothing’s more fun than a Sho’t Left from PE

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePn8bdrh6bo&w=500&h=400]When most South Africans use the term Sho't Left it is on a taxi and means that they are going a short distance and jump off just around the corner.  South African Tourism has adopted the term for its domestic campaign to encourage locals to go on short inexpensive getaways to explore South Africa.  This means that in tourism terms a Sho't Left is a weekend break only a couple of hours away from home.  SAT released a series of…
