The main objective of the South African Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) based at Cape Recife in Port Elizabeth is to save and rehabilitate the endangered African Penguins which is found on the islands in Algoa Bay. Once the whole rehabilitation process is completed, the penguins are released back into the bay to return to their colonies. Saturday afternoon we bundled the family into the car, packed a picnic basket, grabbed the camping chairs and headed down to Settlers Park for the second annual Carols by Candlelight in Settlers Park. The other day during spring high tide we also had a strong easterly wind blowing here in Port Elizabeth and that normally means a very rough sea. I popped down to Hobie Beach to have a look and got a couple of pics around Shark Rock Pier.

The Sukume Human Dignity Centre next to the Walmer Township (Gqebera) consist of a creche, feeding scheme and hand craft project to assist people from the nearby township. The centre recently started a small museum to help visitors understand the township and the culture of the Xhosa people. They still have a lot of different plans for the centre and the museum, but as they do it out of their own pockets its a slow and ongoing project.

The Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve is situated about 40 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth. The reserve is 450 hectares in size and includes both pristine fynbos along the plateau and coastal forest in the gorge. There are several hiking trails through the reserve and one of them will take you to the spot from where the Van Stadens Bridge is visible. One of the magnificent flowers that grow in the reserve is the King Protea, South Africa's national flower.
As I left the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last Saturday night after the EP Kings' game, I decided to drive around the North End Lake and get a couple of pictures of the stadium lit up from the other side. Unfortunately I didn't have my tripod and wanted to use the night setting, so the quality isn't the best, but still its a sight to behold.
