Addo Elephant Back Safaris

This past weekend we went on a trip to Addo Elephant Back Safaris in the Zuurberg Mountains. I took some great photos of elephants, spiders, mountains and all kind of things. Today I want to show a bit of what we did there and over the next couple of days I'll show off some of my other photos. On the day of our arrival we took it easy and only went on a guided walk through the reserve. The next morning…

Msenge Lodge

Over the last couple of days I have posted pics from my visit to Pumba Private Game Reserve and will probably have a few more over the next day or two. Pumba has two lodges. The one is called Pumba Water Lodge and is situated on the edge of a dam, while the second one, Msenge Lodge, is a little further into the reserve in the bush. I got to stay at the latter one of the two. Today I…

Game reserve roads

It's been very dry around here since early winter last year, but over the last week or two we've luckily had some good rains in Port Elizabeth and the surrounding areas. This was quite evident on my visit to Pumba Game Reserve. The grass was lush and green and this makes the roads around the game reserve stand out very nicely. For some reason I just like a two track path through the bush. It has a certain exploring quality…

Left: Big 5 vs Right: Not Big 5

Yeah, yeah... I keep on threatening that I want to try out a couple of creative ways to take a self portrait, but I prefer being behind the camera which means that I am avoiding a self portrait photo shoot as long as possible.I got to spend the night at Pumba Private Game Reserve last night along with a couple of international journalists. On our afternoon game drive we encountered a male lion and I couldn't resist the temptation to…

Don’t mess with me

This pic was taken at the Seaview Game and Lion Park just outside Port Elizabeth. It was taken with my old compact digital camera which means that I was really that close... Ok, so there was a fence between us, but it was still close.

There are two types of rhino. The White Rhino and the Black Rhino. So what are the difference and why are they called so.When the Dutch came to the Cape and started exploring the Southern tip of Africa, they discovered all these magnificent…

Porcupine

I'm sure everybody knows what a porcupine quill looks like, but have you ever actually seen the porcupine itself? A while ago I was at Schotia Private Game Reserve and while we were waiting for dinner in their open air boma, in strolled Mr Porcupine himself. It was the first time that I actually got to see one in real life. What a bonus to the evening's proceedings.Porcupines are nocturnal animals that live in burrows. The forage at night, alone…

Ensuring the survival of the species

I noticed that this is my 100th post. I didn't realise that I've done so many. So how do I celebrate my "blog century". I went scratching around my photo stock and decided to post a one in a hundred (or probably more one in a hundred thousand) photo. This pic was taken in the Addo Elephant National Park. They released lions into Addo about 6 years ago and at first people struggled to even find them. Since then the…
