Lighting the way

Arriving back at Camp Figtree in the Zuurberg after a late afternoon game drive in Addo Elephant National Park, you are welcomed by lanterns lighting the way to the lodge.

Waiting at the waterhole

The Addo Elephant National Park's main restcamp has a water hole just below the parking area where visitors can sit and relax while watching the elephants and other animals come down to drink. Most tourists entering the park normally head straight to the lookout to see if they can glimpse their first elephant, but sometimes it's just nice to sit down, relax and take in the surroundings.

Two of the Big 5

Visitors to the Addo Elephant National Park often go home with stories of magnificent elephant sightings and sometimes have an awesome story to tell of how an elephant walked so close past their car that you could reach out and touch him (just don't actually go and do it).  On a good day you could also tick buffalo, lion and perhaps even black rhino off your "spotting the Big 5 list", but not often can one say that you had more than one…

Addo elephant

One of my favorite parts of being a tourist guide used to be sitting in Addo Elephant National Park and watching the elephants do whatever... Coming down to the water, eating, walking along, standing around, ripping a bush apart, little ones playing, big ones stamping out there authority, whatever... At one stage I used to go to Addo up to 5 or 6 times a week and I never got tired of seeing these huge animals. Pity I didn't have…

On the prowl

The cheetahs is the fastest land mammal in the world and can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.  Unfortunately for them they can't maintain that speed for very long as they would overheat.  For this reason a cheetah needs to creep up as close as possible to their prey before pouncing.  I snapped this magnificent animal a little while ago on a game drive at Pumba Game Reserve outside Port Elizabeth.

Giraffe

Port Elizabeth is blessed with two stunning small game parks within the city boundaries in the Kragga Kamma Game Park and the Seaview Game and Lion Park. Both of these have a number of different animal species that can be view on the game drives through the park. Most people get quite excited when they see giraffe, of which there are quite a few at both reserves.

Traditional dancers

Quite a number of the private game reserves around Port Elizabeth have traditional dancers as part of the entertainment for their guests.  Most of the youngsters in the groups dancing on the reserves either live on the surrounding farms or in one of the small towns close by.  Although South Africans are used to traditional African dancers, the international visitors love it and it always end up as one of the highlights of their visit to the reserves.

Walking with elephants

The Addo Elephant National Park is one of Port Elizabeth's biggest attractions. There is very few game viewing experiences that get close to having a big herd of elephants passing within arm's length of your car. But for those who wants a more personal elephant experience, a visit to Addo Elephants Back Safaris in the Zuurberg Mountains is a must. Although the main activity there is riding the elephants, my favorite experience was walking with them. It gives you the…

Game Lodge cuisine

The lodges on the private game reserves around Port Elizabeth doesn't just dish up the most amazing game sightings, but also some of the most delectable foods you can imagine. Best of all is that non two are the same. Visitors are treated to royal meals three times a day with high teas and sundowner game drive snacks in between as well. This was part of the starters we had on a visit to Pumba Game Reserve a little while…

Old Wagon Trail Inn

When you visit a number of the Big 5 game reserves north-east of Port Elizabeth, one can still see what used to be the old wagon trail that lead from Port Elizabeth to Grahamstown. At Kwantu Game Reserve the remains of one of the old wagon trail inns are still visible in one of the valleys. Looking at the ruins it must have been a very popular spot and quite a magnificent building in the early days. If I owned…
