Braai time

Summer is here and with it the opportunity to participate in one of South Africa's favorite pastimes. Its BRAAI time! "Braai" is the Afrikaans word for barbecue and "vleis" is meat.  Braaivleis is best done on open coals and not on a gas braai, although it is accepted as a lesser alternative.  With the summer holidays around the corner and South Africans heading to the coast (or bush... or mountains... or desert...) there will be lots of braai'ing done by the…

Biltong vendor

One of the most popular vendor stalls at the stadium during a rugby game is the biltong vendor.  For those non-South Africans amongst you who don't know what biltong is, its dried meat and in the USA they call it jerky.  The guy in the picture is my Boet. He knows the owner of the stand who asked him if he would help her out at the game.  I stood there chatting to him for a while and was amazed…

Game Lodge cuisine

The lodges on the private game reserves around Port Elizabeth doesn't just dish up the most amazing game sightings, but also some of the most delectable foods you can imagine. Best of all is that non two are the same. Visitors are treated to royal meals three times a day with high teas and sundowner game drive snacks in between as well. This was part of the starters we had on a visit to Pumba Game Reserve a little while…

Elephants Footprint Lodge

This last weekend we needed to get away, so we dropped the Rugrats at the in-laws and headed out to Addo Elephant National Park. We drove through the park and spent the night at the four star Elephants Footprint Lodge in Colchester. The thatched lodge is ideally situated just outside the park's southern gate and a super spot to spend a couple of days while exploring the park and area. The lodge has 12 magnificent suites to relax in. The…

Fruit vendor

One of the many vendors plying their trade along Govan Mbeki Avenue (Main Street) trying to attract business from the folk who either work in the city centre or move through town towards their place of work elsewhere in Port Elizabeth.

Ginger biscuits

I have been so busy over the last four days accompanying a film crew shooting the city profiles for the FIFA 2010 World Cup that I haven't had much time to do the blogging thing. Thank goodness for forward posting. I wanted to get back into it tonight, but only got home at nearly 10h30 pm, so I'm just grabbing a "in case I don't have time for a proper post" picture. In this case a couple of bags of…

Sosaties

For my Random ... theme I decided to post some food porn (Porn = something of beauty in its natural state causing the viewer's mouth to water while yearning for it... or something like that. Happily ever after

Last night we went to the wedding of our friends Janine and Rudi. For the first time in ages we were at a wedding where our whole table was good friends which meant that we had an absolute ball.I didn't specifically go to take "wedding pictures", but had my camera on hand and snapped a few along the way. Here the happy couple was having their last dance before going off to... their honeymoon of cause. Part of the table…

Potjiekos

When you think of traditional South African foods, a couple seems to put up their hands. But the two that must be right up there in the top three or four must be braaivleis (barbecued meat) and potjiekos (stew made in a cast iron pot on the coals as well). Now I'm not the world's best cook, not by a long shot. My ranking would probably be somewhere in the top 500 million, but I would be able to help…
