The best Currywurst on the Garden Route

Everybody has their preferred road trip food and drink stops.  Some like to pull over at a Wimpy for their favorite coffee, stop at the same farm stall for a pie and fresh pineapple juice or that certain restaurant where the owner is also the chef and makes his pizza bases himself before popping it into the wood fire oven.  I don't travel on the Garden Route as often as I would like to, but my fav Garden Route food stop at the…

Smileys – a township delicacy

Most South Africans probably know what a smiley is, but if you ask any international visitor to the country they would probably say something you use in mobile messages and online comments.  The difference between a township smiley and an online one is very different though.  A township smiley is a cooked sheep's head, regarded as a local delicacy. The sheep heads are boiled in salty water, sometimes with a stock cube thrown in.  Once they are cooked they get put in the…

Malva Pudding recipe

Over the weekend the Damselfly made malva pudding and I decided to nab her recipe for a post.  Malva pudding is a sweet baked pudding of Cape Dutch origin, usually served hot with custard, cream or ice-cream.  My mom always made a double portion of the sauce and we would then eat it with the sauce poured over (like I did this weekend as you can see in the picture).  It is made with apricot jam and has a spongy caramelized…

Pie and strawberry milk at Ou Meul

Some people travel with purpose along the N2 between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth while others take it nice and easy while on holiday.  Doesn't matter which one of the two you are one, you always find somewhere to stop, stretch your legs and get something to fill that hollow spot with.  I always like to try out new places and saw a Geocacher recommend a spot in Riviersonderend in the Overberg in a cache description. His description included the words…

Buying meat at Chilleks Place

Chilleks Place in Walmer Township won the Nando's Shisa Nyama Championship in October last year with some exceptional braai'ing and flavouring.  It's maybe not as well known as the big Shisa Nyamas in Cape Town or Soweto, but the quality of their braai is right up there.  Before manager Coach and braai master Scott or any braaiers braai your meat, you actually get to choose it from the butchery on the premises (unless you order one of their mouth watering baskets).  In…

Cubata ribs, probably the best in town

There are a couple of restaurants around town that serve really good ribs.  The one at the top of my list at the moment is Cubata in Sydenham close to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.  It was one of the dinner stops on the #PERocks bloggers trip and I got the opportunity to try out more than just an order of ribs.  The kitchen is manned by the owner's two sons and these two guys churn out some really tasty food.3kg's of ribs…

New Cash Store ribs

The Old Cash Store on Sardinia Bay Road has been a popular spot over the years but since October last year something has changed.  Well, for a start the name did.  It's now called The New Cash Store.  But a name change did just fall from the sky.  It came with new owners Doug and Clair who have blown new life into an old favorite.  Steak and burger night, pasta night, seafood night, pizza night, live music, an organic market once…

Sushi at Fushin

I'm probably one of the few people who's never tried sushi.  That was until the other day.  I took a group of bloggers for lunch in Stanley Street in Richmond Hill and after sussing out the restaurants on the strip we decided to go for Fushin.  My companions decided to order a couple of sushi platters which meant I had to learn very fast.  But Fushin isn't a bad choice for my first sushi experience.  One of the bloggers, Heather…

Ultimate Braaimaster inspired steak

To braai or not to braai? What a stupid question to ask most South African men.  Braai of cause.  South Africans' love for braai has led to a reality outdoor cooking (on coals) show called The Ultimate Braaimaster that airs on SABC 3.  Their motto is, Come rain or shine or wind or snow... we braai.  Enough said really.  Even though I haven't got the cooking skills to enter it myself the show is a source of inspiration for my own braais.  One…

Shisa Nyama at Chilleks

The word shisa nyama means burned meat in Zulu and a Shisa Nyama refers to a township restaurant or tavern where they serve mainly braaivleis (barbequed meat for those who don't know what a braai is).  In most case the Shisa Nyama will have a butchery attached to it so you have a choice of ordering whatever off the menu or choose your meat from the fridge before it gets braai'd by the establishment's braaimaster for you. Everybody knows Shisa Nyamas like Mzoli's Place in Cape…
