Silver ocean

We have had a fairly mild winter with lots of summery winters weather over the last few months. Heading down to the Port Elizabeth beachfront a couple of weekends ago it would have been easy to think that you were sucked into some kind of time warp and spewed out in the middle of summer. The beachfront was just about packed. The only reason you knew it was still winter was that there was nobody in the (somewhat cold) water. There…

Beach stroll

The weather was so stunning the other day that I couldn't resist going down to Kings Beachat lunchtime for a walk and a couple of pics. This person was coming down the beach towards me with the Port Elizabeth harbour wall in the background and I couldn't help but to snap one to see what it would come out like.

Tsitsikamma coastline – 500th post

Late afternoon scene on the Tsitsikamma coast..Today is the 500th post on this blog. When I started the blog it was intended to just be a place to show off my photos and the place I live in. Since then it has evolved a little bit and has also become what I would like to call an unofficial photographic guide to South Africa, it's places and nature. .Often I wonder if it is worth all the effort if I look…

Humewood slipway

Before the Port Elizabeth Harbour was built in the 1930's, boats in need of repaired were serviced at the Humewood Slipway. The boat would sail in between the pillars and then got pulled onto the slipway using a steam pulley. Today the slipway is a very popular snorkeling site and are used by scuba diving schools for their students' first shore dive. Humewood Beach right next door is the oldest Blue Flag beach in South Africa and currently one of…

Eersterivier Rock features

The rocks at Eersterivier form a lot of interesting little coves and other features. This gully runs along the western side of the village and had lots of kids in it at low tide trying to catch fish with their nets. Next to is was the most amazing deep gully where we swam for most of the day. In between the rocks we found this stunning spot to swim. At its deepest it takes you just below the shoulders. The…

Sandstone rocks and ancient dunes

One of the features of Eersterivier is the ancient sandstone rocks along the sore. They used to be dunes many moons ago but time and other factors (just don't ask me which ones) have hardened them to what they are today. The rocks are very sensitive and visitors to the area are asked not to climb on the or break off pieces. A view down to the small bay on the left hand side of the village where the sand…

Eersterivier

A week or so ago we spent a weekend at Eersterivier in the Tsitsikamma. I hesitate to call it a village as it is nothing more than two rows of houses wedged between the beach in front and the hill behind. Eersterivier (picture above) and Skuitbaai (in the background of the picture below)next door has less than 100 plots each to avoid it being classified as a village. The weekend's weather was gorgeous, the water turquoise (but for some reason…

Kenton Rock Formations

Kenton-on-Sea has the most awesome rock formations along the beach between the Bushmans River Mouth and Middle Beach. When we were the the tide was unfortunately a too high to get nice pics of the rock pools, but here are some formations. Carriage Rock I'm not sure of this ones name. I think it was somewhere around Corner Rocks Ok, so this one isn't Kenton, but at Kwaaihoek close by.GPS: 33°41'37.96"S, 26°40'12.08"E
