Night time stadium

Today is a historic day in Port Elizabeth.  The Southern Kings are making their (very controversial)Super Rugby debut against the Western Force in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tonight.  A capacity crowd is expected and let's hope the boys don't disappoint in front of their home supporters.

Golf club balcony view

Early morning on the upstairs balcony of the Humewood Golf Club clubhouse looking back at the 18th green.  Kinda makes me wish I played golf so that I could try out this magnificent links course.

Humewood links course

We are really fortunate to have a true links golf course in the Humewood Golf Club right here in Port Elizabeth.  This I realised again when I had to go to a meetings at the club and stood on the balcony watching a couple of guys on the 18th fairway while a fishing boat passed in the background.

Nelson Mandelabaai Stadion

Humewood 18th tee

Standing on the 18th tee of the Humewood Golf Course looking down the fairway towards the clubhouse in the distance.  Humewood is a links courses and is consistently ranked as one of South Africa's top golf courses.  The late Bobby Locke considered Humewood Golf Course to be the best in South Africa and said that it compared favourably with the top links courses in the British Isles.  I don't play much golf myself having never done a proper 18 hole course…

Tackeling the city on the Urban Run

Road running isn't for everybody. Pounding away at the road for kilometer after kilometer bores me a little bit, but I do like to participate in races with a difference. The Urban Run around Port Elizabeth's city centre area surely is one of those. Urban Run is a 10,5 kilometer urban obstacle coarse which 1. helps to get people back into the city centre, 2. get people to visit places that they may not have seen or visited in ages,…

School sport day

Do you remember Saturday morning sport at school? Waking up early, getting dressed and ready to go before your parents even had the first coffee? Running around the rugby field or netball court while the other kids and parents cheer you on? Those were the days (although I don't think everybody was always as enthusiastic as I remember them to be).  Anyway, Drama Princess played her first netball game last Saturday and even though they were totally outplayed we shouted…

Hole in one balls

The clubhouse bar at the Humewood Golf Club is covered in golf balls.  Each and every one of these balls have been the the subject of a hole in one somewhere on the course.  If you hit a hole in one the ball gets mounted on a plaque along with you name, the hole number and the date.

Donkin Downhill Dash

This past Sunday the inaugural Donkin Downhill Dash took place at the Donkin Reserve here in Port Elizabeth.  Since the upgrade at the Donkin Reserve local skateboarders have discovered that the new winding path from the lighthouse down towards Chapel Street is the ideal skateboard run.  The n_mb city project approached the Mandela Bay Development Agency who was responsible for the upgrade to support a downhill skateboard competition and they agreed.  The rest, as they say, is history.  I posted…

Skateboarding down the Donkin

One of the things that the redevelopment of the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth has done was inadvertently create the ideal winding downhill skateboard (long board) coarse.  This has led to the first Donkin Downhill Dash taking place today.  The pathway, starting up at the historic lighthouse and pyramid with its crosses representing democratic votes past and future, makes its way down towards Chapel Street and are long enough for the top skaters to clock times of about 1 minute 22…
