Grey Institute after dark

I always like photographing historic buildings lit up with spot lights after dark.  Perhaps its just me but there aren't as many these days as there used to be in the past.  I had to go to an evening meeting at the Grand Hotel in Central and because I was a bit early I popped along the Donkin Reserve to get a couple of photos of those buildings that were lit up.  This is the Grey Institute.

“Moon light bulb”

Some of the regular visitors to the blog is probably starting to wonder why I haven't posted any pictures I took on our December holiday to beautiful Montagu and Cape Town yet.  Well, first my laptop didn't want to read my camera and after 4 days of struggle I took my old pc out of storage and got the pics downloaded.  I started going through them last night and as soon as I have done I will get them posted.Late last…

Stanley Street at night

Over the last couple of years Richmond Hill has developed into one of the premier restaurant districts in Port Elizabeth with a number of very good restaurants, coffee shops and deli's opening up all over the area.  In the evenings, specially over weekends, places like Stanley Street is a hive of activity with patrons dining both inside and out (depending on the weather).

Brookes on the Bay’s view

The new restaurants at Brookes-on-the-Bay have some of the best views of any of the restaurants along the beachfront with views across Kings Beach.  At night you may not be able to see as far out to sea, but the harbour and city lights also make for a magnificent backdrop.

Opening of the Season fireworks

Last night the annual Opening of the Season fireworks took place at Hobie Beach after it was postponed due to rainy weather the previous night.  I really didn't feel like taking on the crowds and traffic jams on the beachfront for a couple of pictures, so I decided to head up to Lovemore Heights to see if I can get a glimpse from there.  It wasn't the best vantage point as you could only see the high fireworks from there,…

Matriarch

Today (9 August) is National Women's Day here in South Africa and I would like to pay tribute to women everywhere by posting a picture of a female elephant. Confused? Don't be. Elephant family groups are lead by matriarchs. What they say goes and they lead by example. I have even seen them "tell off" the big adult bulls when they join up with the breeding herds and, believe me, that must take something. So here's to the women in…

Crescent moon

The other evening Chaos Boy asked me why the moon has a second moon on top of it. I couldn't figure out what he meant and went to check. It was a crescent moon, but the part of the moon in shadow was clearly visible. For more pictures featuring the sky, visit Skywatch

Soccer ball light structures

Today is the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup here in South Africa. I will be posting most of my World Cup photos on my Port Elizabeth Daily Photo blog, but some will make their way here as well. The posts on here will continue business as usual. These photos are of the new soccer ball structures on the traffic circles outside the Port Elizabeth Airport. They are beautifully lit up at night and while I was there taking…
