Kings Beach Egyptian Goose

Egyptian Geese are generally very territorial so once a pair finds a home they will very much stick around.  This means that young birds have to find their own "unused water holes" which isn't always that freely available.  I know of some that even made a dogless backyard with a swimming pool their home.  It was great to see that a pair of Egyptian Geese quickly made their move in at the lake at the new Kings Beach development.  Always great to see wildlife…

Happy Fathers Day

I had a Sunday lunch of note today and I am seriously stuffed.  What's the special occasion?  Its Fathers Day of cause and I got thoroughly spoiled today.  I was looking for a father themed picture to post and decided on this one I snapped at the new Kings Beach skate park the other day of a father and his son enjoying a nice warm day to try out the new facilities.

Denville’s

The little beach on the south side of the McArthur Swimming pool complex is generally part of Kings Beach, but amongst the local surfing community its known as  Denville's.  The name came from a couple of guys, Dennis Buchman and Neville Mandy, that used to surf here around the 60's.  Its still a favourite surfing spot, specially with beginners.

Kings Beach silhouettes

Winter may be coming but for the past four days summer's been gracing us with her presence.  From the look of it she's also planning to hang around for the weekend.  Hey, I'm not complaining.

Jellyfish at Fence

The surf spot at Kings Beach next to the harbour wall is called fence.  Apparently years ago when there wasn't as much sand against the wall the place used to cook as a surf spot.  Today its but a shadow of its former self.  So where does the name come from?  There was a big fence that ran along the harbour wall to stop the fishermen getting up onto the wall from the beach to go fishing.  The fence was about 200…

Kings Beach Panorama

I've been looking at old posts and dates and realised its been just over four years since I took over Port Elizabeth Daily Photo from Sue and Max. WOW, I can't believe that I've been at it for four years already.  I also noticed that in a couple of weeks PEDP is coming up to 2000 posts of which by then I would have done 1500.  But I'll wait for the actual occasion to get all soppy and emotional.  Not just quite…

Kings Beach development

I went for a walk around the new Kings Beach development with the Damselfly and just realised again how the beachfront has been enhanced.  And its not even finished yet.  I can't wait to see the new additions they're still working on. Plus what is yet to come.

Harbour wall

Many years ago people could fish off and walk on the Port Elizabeth Harbour wall, but this changed with the upgrading of security protocol at harbours a numer of years ago.  Big Huge Humongous was my surprise when I went for a walk on Kings Beach all the way to the harbour wall for the first time in a very very long time.  Getting to the wall I found no barriers, no fences or even signs stating that one isn't allowed onto the wall. …

Nippers

On Saturday while having a walk along Kings Beach we found that there was a regional Nippers competition on the go.  Nippers are young Surf Lifesavers between 5 and 14 years old. Unlike senior Surf Lifesavers, the majority of them do not patrol the beaches but focus on fun and surf awareness.Nippers learn about safety at the beach. They learn about dangers such as rocks and animals as well as surf conditions such as rip currents, sandbars, and waves.  Like their Senior…

Back to the beach

After a couple of wet months (as I've said before, 2012 has been the wettest non flood year on record) it finally seems that summer is starting to slowly muscle its way into our lives.  Although its not totally in the door yet, the days are starting to warm up very nicely and people are heading back to the beach front more and more.  Even I went for a run on the beachfront walkway the other afternoon.  The less said…
