Under threat

There were 633 rhino's poached in South Africa in 2012.  It a very sad and shocking statistic and even with millions of rands collected for anti-poaching activities and millions of people made aware of the fact, it seems that the problem is still far from being solved.  This picture of a young white rhino was taken at one of the game reserves close to Port Elizabeth, but the poaching problem means that I just don't want to disclose which one.

Elephant buffet

An elephant at Pumba Game Reserve chomping away on his breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner.  I can't really remember what time I took the photo but it doesn't really matter because to elephants life is one big buffet.

Hippo at Lalibela

Some people get real excited by seeing lions and elephants or even something rare like an aardwolf in real life on a game drive.  The Damselfly had her moment when she saw real live hippos for the first time at Lalibela Game Reserve near Port Elizabeth. What made the sighting even better was that there were a number of this huge semi-aquatic mammals in the dam when we got there and the one then proceeded to get up so that we could…

White Lions at Pumba

There are about 500 white lions left in the world, most of them in captivity.  Pumba Game Reserve is one of only a few game reserves in South Africa that has free range white lions on its property.  Pumba's white lions is right at the top of what visitors to the reserve wants to see and it was no different when I got to visit for a night.  On the evening game drive we spotted a female with two cubs in the…

Rhino in danger

After a spate of poaching incidents the total number of rhino's killed in 2012 for their horns have now topped 500. A very sad state situation and if this doesn't stop quickly then my (future - cause I'm not that old) grandchildren would never one day get the opportunity to see rhino in the wild... or even at all.

Lake de la Vie

Lake de la Vie next to the lake at Lake Farm (hence the name) is one of Port Elizabeth's premier wedding and function venues.  The place is truly stunning and what makes it even better is the fact that its located on the exclusive 1000 hectares Royalston Private Wildlife Reserve and Residential Estate.  Truly a stunning place for a romantic wedding.

Pumba elephant

After a quick visit we were driving out of Pumba Game Reserve and passing Water Lodge when we found an elephant approaching across a field towards us.  Unfortunately for me the sun was behind him so I couldn't really get a great picture, but that doesn't matter.  He came lumbering along, looked at as pass him and then proceeded down the track towards the lodge.  Probably for breakfast.Looking back at him moseying along towards the lodge  as we were driving away

Mark’s Camp Walkway

Its Saturday afternoon and the weather is perfect in the Bay.  The EP Kings just won the Currie Cup first division, I have my fire going and a couple of t-bones are waiting to go on the coals.  What could be better?  Not much other than perhaps spending this perfect afternoon on the deck at the bottom of this walkway at Mark's Camp at Lalibela Game Reserve.

A face only a mother can love

Its amazing how you get to interact with the animals at game reserves not just from on top of a 4x4 but somethings also face to face.  At a recent visit to Pumba Game Reserve I was walking along the walkway to the rooms at Pumba Water Lodge when I passed this warthog grazing about 2 meters away.  He looked up at me, snorted (as if to let me know I'm in his space and not vice versa) and watched…

Zebra and foal

"What are those things Mommy?""Those are tourists my son.  They come out twice a day in the mornings and afternoons on those big 4x4's to gawk at us.  Smile nicely now, that one is busy taking our photo."
