Impala at Kragga Kamma

A week or so ago we spent the morning in Kragga Kamma Game Park as a family.  Its been a while since I've visited the park and every time I go I'm amazed at how fortunate we are to have such a great little park so close to the city.  One of the pictures I took on the day was of an female Impala who was part of a breeding herd that was grazing next to the road.  I thought…

Zuurkop viewsite in Addo

One of the best view sites in the Addo Elephant National Park is from the top of Zuurkop.  Its one of the spots in the park where one is allowed to get out of your car although you still need to be vigilant as its no a fenced area.

The pretty girl and the dung beetle

Looks can be deceiving.  You tend to think young pretty girls would only be interested in fashion, nightlife, tanning on the beach, spending time in the shops and hanging out with their friends. Yes, yes, I know I'm generalizing but I'm trying to get to a point so bare with me.  Late last year I hosted a travel blogger visit to Port Elizabeth and the surrounding area and the first blogger of the five to arrive was Rachel Lang, known…

Drinking buddies

A couple of young elephant bulls drinking at Gwarrie Dam in the Addo Elephant National Park.  Gwarrie is one of the waterholes  where you often get to see elephants but unfortunately also one of those spots where a lot of idiots get out there cars for a better look.  Luckily I didn't encounter any clowns on this visit, just these two dudes.

The magnificence that is Addo Elephant National Park

I've been in the tourism industry for 16 years and first started out working as a tourist guide back in 1998.  Back then I used to go to Addo Elephant National Park sometimes as often as 5 or 6 times a week and people used to ask if I didn't get tired of going there.  I did get tired of the drive to and from the park but I would never get tired of the park itself.  It quickly became one…

Hello baby

Baby elephants never venture very far from their mothers and isn't always that easy to photograph as they zig-zag in-between legs and duck under adults.  This little guy looked quite at ease just playing around while mommy and the other big elephants were browsing next to the road in the rain.  We were about an hour into our game drive at Addo Elephant National Park and even though we've already has some great ellie sightings, having them so close to…

Antelope skull

A game drive through a reserve with predators are all about watching live game but more often than not one would encounter the remains of not so live game.  During our sundowner stop on a game drive at Kuzuko Lodge I found this lone skull out in the open very interesting.  Probably a kudu skull as there was a kudu horn lying close by, I can only imagine how he came about his end.  Must have been quite a sight…

Lalibela Game Reserve – a photo essay

There are some truly awesome game reserves around Port Elizabeth ranging from the epic Addo Elephant National Park to excellent private game reserves with top class lodges.  Playing right in that space is Lalibela Game Reserve between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.  Lalibela is home to the Big 5 as well as other predators like cheetah, hyena, jackal & lynx on 7500 hectares with visitors staying in one of three excellent lodges.  I spent a night with the Damselfly in late…

Preditor Park hyena

During my last visit to the Seaview Predator Park I snapped a couple of pics of their two Hyenas and wanted to share this one with you.  Since my visit the two, named Ed and Shenzi, has been returned to the reserve they came from as babies and word is that they are doing great and have found themselves at home with the group right away.  I couldn't find any other information on their website or FB on why the hyenas came to Seaview…
