Inter house athletics

It is summer and schools have started so it means that it is athletics time.  Over the last week and a half I attended both KidZ' inter house athletics meets.  First it was Chaos Boy who is in DF Malherbe High School and had their inter house day at the NMMU track. A week later Drama Princess, who is at Newton Park Primary School, had theirs at the Oval in Richmond Hill.  A day like this brings back lots of memories…

Pink piggy at the Red Windmill

A bit of exploring through the Overberg brought us to the Red Windmill farm stall and restaurant outside the town of Napier.  Next to the entrance we discovered this pink pig and how can one not want a photo with a pink pig?  We opted for a family photo for a change and as I had no tripod had to make do with a backpack on the ground

Baby Club goes to high school

All you saw on social media, especially Facebook, on Wednesday was back to school photos.  Kids off to pre-school, grade 1, grade 8 and everything in between for the first time.  The Damselfly posted a back to school pic but I never did.  So today it is my turn with a back to school post with a bit of a difference. When the Damselfly was pregnant with Chaos Boy in 2002 we attended antenatal classes at the St Georges Hospital with…

Walking the dogs

The exams are over and the Damselfly and I are confident that we will be passing grades 4 and 7 successfully again this year.  Did it mean that there was time to finally get out there and take some photos again seeing that I've run out? Well, not really.  There was a little time this afternoon though to take the sausages for a walk around the block.  Camera will have to start working overtime from tomorrow again.

Checking the Kouga Dam overflowing

A week or two three ago we spent the weekend at Tia Ghee Tented Camp in the Gamtoos Valley and heard that the Kouga Dam was still overflowing after good late winter and spring rains.  We immediately decided to take a drive up to the dam for a look and we definitely weren't disappointed. From the tar road, very close to where it becomes dirt going into the Baviaanskloof, there is a dirt road turnoff to the left and about 7…

First cricket of the season

Drama Princess is sports mad and very competitive.  In the winter she plays netball and tennis and in summer she does athletics and plays cricket... Yes, you read correctly.  My daughter plays cricket.  She is one of three girls in the Newton Park Primary u/11 team and on Tuesday they played their first game of the season against St Dominic Priory.  I love seeing the reaction of the boys in the other teams when our team arrives.  Not one but three…

Together for 15 years through thick and thin

The Damselfly and I had our 15th anniversary two weeks ago and as it goes, posted about it on social media.  A few days later I got a call from a reporter at the Herald asking me if they could do an article in the La Femme supplement to include in their regular page celebrating weddings and anniversaries.  She emailed us a few questions and organised for a photographer to meet us for the picture.  The Damselfly mentioned in her…

Going on an Adventure Drive in the Gamtoos Valley

Beautiful scenery, rolling hills covered in fynbos, citrus orchids, farmlands, white frothing streams, mountains on the horizon, forested valleys, interesting back roads, friendly people and countryside hospitality.  These are all things you will find in the Gamtoos Valley.  The best way to explore and get to know the Gamtoos Valley is to spend a weekend and see for yourself what this valley on the eastern doorstep of the Baviaanskloof has to offer.  One of the quick fire ways to do this…

Playing marbles

So apparently marbles is the in thing again at the KidZ' school.  Sheez, I remember how we played marbles when I was still in primary school.  Amazing how fads like this come and go.  Yesterday while attending the International Geocaching Day event at The Island the KidZ got bored with the rest of us and decided to play some marbles. Check out Chaos Boy's bag full on his back.

Chaos Boy turns 13 at Sleepy Hollow

Chaos Boy turns 13 today (I can't believe he's a teenager now) and he wanted to have an outdoor "Survivor" party.  We decided that the best place to have an outdoor party would be at Sleepy Hollow and this morning we headed out there with eight kids for a day of hiking, swimming in the Maitland River's pools, foofy sliding, slippery sliding and exploring the old mines. My best attempt at a Survivor cakeHighlights of the day
