Swimming at Kings Beach… seen from the sea

I don't get to go on the sea that often so cruising along the beachfront on The Jester gives one the opportunity to experience a different view of the beautiful Port Elizabeth beachfront.  And it really is beautiful.  One of the things that does come across as a little weird though is watching people swimming on the beach side and not with the ocean behind them like one usually see.

Bird Rock on the PE beachfront

Geocaching is fun with most caches hidden somewhere fairly easily eccessible.  For a while now I've been eyeing Bird Rock on the beachfront thinking it could be a great site for an "extreme" terrain 5 cache and the other day I took a swim out there with fellow cachers Seekoei and erenei to place one with only three cachers swimming out there since to log it.  Bird Rock is situated between Hobie Beach and Pollok Beach and is always surrounded…

Enjoying Kini Bay

The gully on the beach at Kini Bay is fast becoming a favorite with my family.  It's safe, not too crowded and a great spot to teach the kids how to snorkel.

Top of Maitland Dune

I often wonder how many Port Elizabeth folk have never climbed up the Maitland dune at least once in their life.  Can't be many but if you haven't, this is the view you would not have seen.

Maitland Beach

Maitland Beach to the west of Port Elizabeth.  Miles and miles of sandy beach, giant dunes and beautiful sunsets.  What more do you want?

Kini Bay gully

On New Years Day we went looking for a quite beach to relax on, cool off and catch some sun.  We discovered the ideal spot in Kini Bay.  A gully right in front of Sea Otters Lodge.  While Port Elizabeth's main beaches were packed to the brim, the Kini Bay beach was nice and quiet and the gully was a safe spot for the KidZ to swim and snorkel at their heart's delight.  We will definitively come back to this spot…

Hobie Beach and Boardwalk panorama

I took this panorama of Hobie Beach with the Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre in the background from the Jester the other day.  Cruising on the Jester does give one a whole new angle to look at the Port Elizabeth beachfront from and you just realise again how beautiful our beachfront is.

Death on the beach

Maybe its just me, but its always sad when I find a dead marine bird, shark or something on the beach.  I went for a walk along the Sacramento Trail at Schoenmakerskop and spotted this departed Cape Gannet from some distance away already.  The rest of my group walked by without even a glance while I felt I just had to stop to reflect on its former beauty (and of cause snap a picture).   Bird Island (part of the Greater Addo Elephant…

Save our rhino in the sand

Rhino poaching is a serious issue in South Africa and the more awareness that is created the better.  Playing his part in this is the sand sculptor at Hobie Beach.  Passing by the other morning I spotted his sand rhino and had to snap a picture.
