Two of the Big 5

Visitors to the Addo Elephant National Park often go home with stories of magnificent elephant sightings and sometimes have an awesome story to tell of how an elephant walked so close past their car that you could reach out and touch him (just don't actually go and do it).  On a good day you could also tick buffalo, lion and perhaps even black rhino off your "spotting the Big 5 list", but not often can one say that you had more than one…

Zebras

Donkeys in pajamas must be one of the animals that visitors to game reserves love seeing most.  The Burchell's Zebra is the most common zebra that you will find in the game reserves of the Eastern Cape.  They are identifiable by the fact that the stripes go all the way underneath their stomachs and by the brownish phantom stripes visible on their wide white stripes. The endangered Cape Mountain Zebra are found only on a few game reserves in the province. …

Jozi Zoo animals

Following yesterday's post on the Johannesburg Zoo, I decided to post a couple of random animal photos I took on our visit.  I have said so before and I will say so again (and again and again and again) that I much rather prefer to visit a game reserve and look for the animals in their natural environment.  The problem is that not everybody in society gets the opportunity to visit game reserves and thus zoos will always be the…

Jozi Zoo

On our recent trip up to Gauteng we stayed with friends in Johannesburg for a couple of days.  The Sunday we was a stunning day and our friends suggested that we go to the Johannesburg Zoo for a picnic.  I have had an opportunity to visit Jozi Zoo on a previous visit, but my family has never been there and even though I personally prefer game reserves over zoos, I though the kids would really enjoy it.  Plus any trip with…

On the prowl

The cheetahs is the fastest land mammal in the world and can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.  Unfortunately for them they can't maintain that speed for very long as they would overheat.  For this reason a cheetah needs to creep up as close as possible to their prey before pouncing.  I snapped this magnificent animal a little while ago on a game drive at Pumba Game Reserve outside Port Elizabeth.

Giraffe

Port Elizabeth is blessed with two stunning small game parks within the city boundaries in the Kragga Kamma Game Park and the Seaview Game and Lion Park. Both of these have a number of different animal species that can be view on the game drives through the park. Most people get quite excited when they see giraffe, of which there are quite a few at both reserves.

Tiger

One of the tigers at the Seaview Game and Lion Park just outside Port Elizabeth. Seaview has three adult tigers, of which one recently gave birth, in a big enclosure next to the white lions.

Hottentot Golden Mole

For the last year or two I have had something digging up the lawn behind the house. It didn't push mole hills like I am used to, but rather tunnels just below the surface which you can actually see in the grass. But up to now the bugger as evaded me. Till the other day when I pulled up the driveway and found a figure lying motionless on the paving. Don't know how this little guy came to his end,…
