PE is a photographer’s dream

Diving lessons

I'm a qualified scuba diver but I haven't "blown bubbles" as they say for probably 10 years.  So I was very excited when Ocean Divers International (ODI) invited a couple of us from the office for an educational.  Two of us had dived before while the other four were all virgin divers.  It was such an amazing experience getting back in the pool with the full kit on again and brushing up on the skills.  The next day we headed out to sea…

Merry Christmas (from a beach in Africa)

The sun shines on the Wildside

The coastline from Cape Recife to Schoenmakerskop is generally known as the Wildside due to it rocky coastline and the fact that the prevailing south-easterly wind can pump out there on the best of days and make the sea well and truly rough.  Don't get me wrong though, the weather isn't always bad and when its good this piece of coastline is an amazing spot to explore, fish from or just have a family picnic.  The spot in the photo…

Cape Recife coast

Looking back at the point at Cape Recife from one of the view points on Marine Drive. The lighthouse is visible on the left and the reef runs out for a couple of kilometres from the rocky coastline on the right.

Flat Rocks

The area between Pollock Beach and Cape Receive is generally known as Flat Rocks. The name refers to the rocks stretching out to sea at low tide. The rocks are easily accessible and is very popular fishing site. Some of the older Port Elizabeth followers will remember the old Flat Rocks Roadhouse which was situated overlooking the sea across the road from the Humewood Golf Club entrance. The Willows

Situated just 15km outside town on Marine Drive along Port Elizabeth's Wildside is The Willows Resort. The Willows is an institution in PE with people who have gone there with their families as kids now camping there with their kids. Coastal springs

There are a lot of fresh water springs that originate along the Wildside coast of Port Elizabeth. All along the coast at places like Willows, Schoenmakerskop, Kini Bay and Seaview and in between you would find fresh water seeping through the rocks and running down to the sea. Kini Bay coast line

Kini Bay is situated west of Port Elizabeth and is part of Port Elizabeth's "Wildside". The Wildside refers to the coastline outside Algoa Bay stretching to the west. Most of it consist of rocky shoreline although there are sections of magnificent sandy beaches in between at Sardinia Bay and Maitlands. The perfect sea view

I got to visit the Sea Otters Lodge in Kini Bay just west of Port Elizabeth today and was stunned by its perfect setting. Walking out onto the back garden you are literally on the beach. At the bottom of the garden is a two seater swing with the perfect view. I could see myself spending a day sitting there with a drink, a book and lots of peace and quiet.
