Wildside walk

Most people know the Sacramento Trail at Schoenmakerskop but isn't very familiar with the nearby Fynbos Trail.  Out looking for a Geocache last weekend I ventured onto part of the trail and snapped this pic looking west towards Schoenies.

Schoenies views

Schoenmakerskop (or Schoenies) is everybody's favorite seaside "village" in Port Elizabeth.  A beautiful spot with a rugged coastline, safe swimming gullies and hiking trails plus it doesn't get anywhere as busy as the city's main beachfront.  I popped down to Schoenies to look for a newly placed Geocache and caught Drama Princess on camera while she enjoyed the views.

Tanks at Schoenies

Most people enjoy Port Elizabeth's main beaches but there are the few who try to flee the crowds to their favorite hidden spots and the little "beaches" and gullies in Schoenmakerskop are amongst these.  The most popular one in Schoenies is just in front of the Sacramento Restaurant and can be reached via steps down to the beach.  The spot is called Tanks.  According to Luc Hosten of Friends of Schoenmakerskop there are two theories on where the name came from.  The first one is that apparently large…

Willows sunset

Late last year we spent an evening at Willows Resort with the in-laws and this was the sunset from in front of chalet.  You couldn't ask for better.

Kini Bay gully

On New Years Day we went looking for a quite beach to relax on, cool off and catch some sun.  We discovered the ideal spot in Kini Bay.  A gully right in front of Sea Otters Lodge.  While Port Elizabeth's main beaches were packed to the brim, the Kini Bay beach was nice and quiet and the gully was a safe spot for the KidZ to swim and snorkel at their heart's delight.  We will definitively come back to this spot…

The Coastal Fynbos Trail

The Coastal Fynbos Trail in Schoenmakerskop is probably one of the slightly lesser known trails around Port Elizabeth.  Thanks to the PE Geocaching series which created the letters PE as geoart on the Geocache map, a few more people have set off to explore the trail lately. The trail is a circular trail and covers about 7 km on the eastern side of the village, starting at Sappershoek.  The first section of the trail is an inland route through the coastal fynbos…

Flowers on the Fynbos Trail

I recently had an outing along the Fynbos Trail near Schoenmakerskop with a friend while planting some geocaches and snapped this picture of a bush of flowers.  Not exactly sure what it was or if its even supposed to grow naturally on the Wildside.  I just thought it makes for a nice scene.

Sardinia Bay seen from the Sacramento Trail

Walking along the Sacramento Trail one can see the sand dunes of Sardinia Bay in the distance the whole time.  With about a kilometer to go the old Surf Lifesaving and ski boat club buildings come into view with the walkway over to the parking area.
