Swampy coastline

Along the Wildside there are many fresh water springs that originate from water that has collected between the (vegetated) sand dunes along what used to be the Driftsands area.  The water then emerges again on the coast in the form of springs and flow to the sea.  In some places it dams up above the high water mark between rocks and swampy spots get formed.  In the search of a geocache the other day I had to cross through one of these…

Sacramento Trail coastline

This time of years the long summers days and the fact that most people are on holiday (and I say most because not everybody is as fortunate as the rest of us though) give one the opportunity to get out and do some outdoorsy stuff.  As the last post for 2012 I decided to post a view of the magnificent coastline on the Sacramento Trail between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay.  The trail is only about 4km each way making a total of…

View from Barnacles’ deck

Port Elizabeth has a number of restaurants with great sea views, one of the Barnacles in Seaview.  The view from the deck at Barnacles overlook the rugged coastline and you often spot whales (in season) and dolphins going by.  My visit unfortunately coincided with a cold front so it wasn't ideal weather to sit outside and enjoy the scenery.

Walking the coast on the Sacramento

Port Elizabeth has a stunningly beautiful coastline starting with the huge sand dunes at Colchester, white sandy and safe swimming beaches on the main beachfront, a rocky shoreline along the Wildside through to the "long walk on the beach" beaches at Sardinia Bay and Maitland.  There are two guided hikes on during Tourism Month where the public has been invited to join Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism and the metro's nature conservation unit in enjoying this stunning coastline.  Follow the links for…

Schoenies fresh water stream

The area around Schoenmakerskop and the Sacramento Trail has a number of fresh water springs seeping out the surrounding countryside and flowing down towards the sea. With all the rain we've had these past couple of months some of the little streams are flowing nice and strong. This specific one can be found close to the Sacramento monument a few hundred meters down the trail.
