First cricket of the season

Drama Princess is sports mad and very competitive.  In the winter she plays netball and tennis and in summer she does athletics and plays cricket... Yes, you read correctly.  My daughter plays cricket.  She is one of three girls in the Newton Park Primary u/11 team and on Tuesday they played their first game of the season against St Dominic Priory.  I love seeing the reaction of the boys in the other teams when our team arrives.  Not one but three…

Saturday sports day at Mount Pleasant

On Saturday Drama Princess played netball at the annual Newton Park Primary vs Mount Pleasant Primary inter schools sports day.  This year it took place at Mount Pleasant where I went to primary school many moons ago.  Now who do I support? Sorry Mount Pleasant, the KidZ are in Newton Park. I did walk around reminiscing a bit.  Lots of childhood memories around the area.

Unique Physique classes

About a year ago I joined a fitness class that I thought was a boot camp class.  I was so wrong.  It wasn't a hardcore boot camp class but rather an easy going fitness class.  Our instructor and personal trainer, Salif Atakora, puts us through a serious of stretches and exercises every week which has helped to get my life and fitness back on track.  The best part is that even though we work hard, it doesn't feel like we're doing…

Witnessing the impossible on the Ironman running leg

After spending 5 hours next to the road supporting the Ironman competitors on the cycle leg and popping home to do a couple of things like mow the lawn, we headed down to the beachfront after sunset to cheer on the runners.  My mouth just hangs open year after year watching people who have already swum 3,8 km and cycled 180 km still run 42,2 km as if its just a jog around the block.  You can see some of…

Supporting the Ironman cyclists

Today is Ironman Sunday, one of the biggest sporting days in Port Elizabeth.  We decided to spend most of the day supporting these inspirational sportsmen and women and headed out early to cheer on the guys and girls on the cycle leg on the intersection of Buffelsfontein and Walter Road in Charlo. This is the chasing pack of 11, a couple of minutes behind the first four on the second cycle loop.  We spent about 5 hours out there and…

The St Georges Park Brass Band

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k87wyxb9fs&w=500&h=400]The St Georges Brass Band has become an institution at the St Georges Park Cricket Ground over the years.  Some people join in with them singing their lungs out while others despise the noise. Regardless of this it is hard to deny that the band has given St Georges a very unique atmosphere and once the local team gets their tails up and the band gets involved, its hard to stop the wave washing over the opposition.

Ironman African Championship video

https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/OIfF88IRZas&source=udsWith Ironman 70.3 taking place in East London this weekend I thought it to be appropriate to post this awesome promotional video that has been put together for this year's Ironman African Championship here in Port Elizabeth.  I can see there is a bit of confusion out there,  Yes, Ironman South Africa is now known as Ironman African Championship and is one of only five championship level events in the world.  It means more prestige, more entries and more international…

The green green grass of St George’s Park

I took a walk around Park Drive a day or two before the cricket test between South Africa and the West Indies were due to start and decided to pop into the St George's Park Cricket Stadium quickly.  I love the fact that one can get in and right onto the field without anybody stopping and questioning you.St George's Park staged the first cricket test to be played outside England or Australia in 1888-89 with England winning by eight wickets.  In…
