The Wine Show

This past weekend the Nelson Mandela Bay leg of the annual The Wine Show took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.  The city really needs more shows like this and looking at the popularity people are hungry (or in this case perhaps thirsty) for them.  Most of the exhibitors were boutique cellars and visitors to the show got the opportunity to taste and get to know a lot of wines which they perhaps have never heard of before. I think John Woodward,…

Priory Fair

Today's post is a case of better late than never.  The reason for being late is the Mohair series I posted last week which started before I downloaded the pictures I took last weekend.  Last Saturday (26 May) the annual Priory Fair took place at St Dominic's Priory.  The Priory Fair is probably the most popular school "fete" in Port Elizabeth and I am just amazed at how many people support it.  We were there early for the book sale…

Oscar Maximus visits the Donkin

In 2009 Oscar the mix breed mutt was sitting on death row at the SPCA in Cape Town and had his lucky break by getting adopted one day before being put down.  Since then Oscar has become the world's most widely travelled dog.  He had travelled over 200 000 all over and around the world and has visited most of the world's well know landmarks, probably lifting his leg against most of them.  Through his travelers Oscar is bringing the…

Splash Fest crowds

The Splash Festival in Port Elizabeth is the biggest 4 day beach festival in South Africa and draws thousands of people to Hobie Beach over Easter weekend.  The beach sport like Beach Volleyball and Beach Rugby are always popular events but the thing that pulls the most people to the festival is Saturday night fireworks display on Shark Rock Pier with people searching out good viewing spots from early on already.

South African Junior Chess Championships

For the last week some of the brightest young minds in the country have been taking part in the annual South Africa Junior Chess Championships, this year hosted at the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan University right here in Port Elizabeth.  I popped down to the Indoor Sports Centre to have a peek and nearly fell on my back when I saw the amount of participants.  More than 2000 kids from all over South Africa are taking part in this event…

Celebrations

Celebrations as the All Blacks receive the trophee as winners of the South African leg of the IRB 7's World Series in Port Elizabeth.Another reason to celebrate is the fact that today is Port Elizabeth Daily Photo's 1500th post and thus my 1000th post since taking over the blog from Max and Sue.  This comes shortly after I recently did post number 1000 on The Firefly Photo Files as well.  Thank you to all the loyal followers of PEDP for your regular visits as well…

Running out for the final

The Blitzbokke (South Africa) and the All Blacks (New Zealand) takes the field for the start of the final of the South African leg of the IRB 7's World Series in Port Elizabeth.  The crowd went mad every time the Boks touched the ball and I think most people were on their feet for just about the whole game.  Unfortunately for us the All Blacks got the ball seconds before the end of the game and went over for the…

IRB 7’s action

Opening of the Season fireworks

Last night the annual Opening of the Season fireworks took place at Hobie Beach after it was postponed due to rainy weather the previous night.  I really didn't feel like taking on the crowds and traffic jams on the beachfront for a couple of pictures, so I decided to head up to Lovemore Heights to see if I can get a glimpse from there.  It wasn't the best vantage point as you could only see the high fireworks from there,…

Penguin release

The main objective of the South African Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) based at Cape Recife in Port Elizabeth is to save and rehabilitate the endangered African Penguins which is found on the islands in Algoa Bay.  Once the whole rehabilitation process is completed, the penguins are released back into the bay to return to their colonies.  I was very fortunate to be at such an event the other day where ten penguins were released.After the crates that they were transported in to the…
