Lion cub

My post tonight on the Port Elizabeth Photo Files is about the Seaview Game and Lion Park and in the picture is a couple handling the big cubs at the park. On my visit there were also small cubs (I didn't get the age, but I think them to be about 5 or 6 weeks old). They are still too small for guests to handle them as they haven't had their inoculations yet.

My, what big teeth you have

On my visit to Seaview Game and Lion Park just outside Port Elizabeth on Sunday, this adult male white lion was lying right up against the fence allowing me to get some great close-up photos.

Elephants eating

It is not often that one gets the opportunity to get right down on the ground close to an elephant to get photos of him eating and going about his daily routine. This was one of the things I really enjoyed at Addo Elephant Back Safaris last weekend. Elephants are fascinating eaters. They eat up to 200kg of vegetation per day. Because they are herbivores (vegetarians), and thus only eat plants. Imagine if the were carnivores. What would it look…

Elephant close-ups

Just a couple of close-up shots of elephants taken last weekend at Addo Elephant Back Safaris. Elephant skin taken with the macro setting of my camera. *skin cream needed* The bottom of an elephant's foot. It is amazing to watch them walk. They put their feet down flat and not heal and toe like us. The feet has a kind of a cushion in it which absorbs the impact when they walk which means they are very delicate walkers. *heal…

Addo Elephant Back Safaris

This past weekend we went on a trip to Addo Elephant Back Safaris in the Zuurberg Mountains. I took some great photos of elephants, spiders, mountains and all kind of things. Today I want to show a bit of what we did there and over the next couple of days I'll show off some of my other photos. On the day of our arrival we took it easy and only went on a guided walk through the reserve. The next morning…

Left: Big 5 vs Right: Not Big 5

Yeah, yeah... I keep on threatening that I want to try out a couple of creative ways to take a self portrait, but I prefer being behind the camera which means that I am avoiding a self portrait photo shoot as long as possible.I got to spend the night at Pumba Private Game Reserve last night along with a couple of international journalists. On our afternoon game drive we encountered a male lion and I couldn't resist the temptation to…

Elephant skin

Elephants are amazing animals and as a tourist guide I used to have so many facts to give the tourists that I could not always get to all of them. For today I will stick to a couple of skin facts. The thing I find most interesting about elephants' skin is that they don't have sweat glands to keep them cool. That is why they like to swim and throw (not blow, I'll explain at the end of the post)…

White Rhino

Everybody knows the Big 5, but why are they called so and what are they? The Big 5 are the 5 most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. They are the lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. There are two types of rhino. The White Rhino and the Black Rhino. So what are the difference and why are they called so.When the Dutch came to the Cape and started exploring the Southern tip of Africa, they discovered all these magnificent…

Ensuring the survival of the species

I noticed that this is my 100th post. I didn't realise that I've done so many. So how do I celebrate my "blog century". I went scratching around my photo stock and decided to post a one in a hundred (or probably more one in a hundred thousand) photo. This pic was taken in the Addo Elephant National Park. They released lions into Addo about 6 years ago and at first people struggled to even find them. Since then the…
