I can still see you

I attended the media launch of the Kirkwood Wildsfees in the Addo Elephant National Park and to end the program off we were taken on an open vehicle game drive through the park.  As is often usual in Addo we had some stunning sightings.  This guy was peeking at us from behind a bush trying to be inconspicuous.  Gives him a bit of a mysterious look, doesn't it. The annual Wildsfees takes place from 28 - 30 June 2013 in the…

St Francis of the animals

Outside the Animal Welfare Society's offices on Victoria Drive stands the figure of St Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment.  A fitting place for him to bestow his blessings on.

Why you come empty handed?

SAMREC and the East Cape Horse Care Unit are my two favorite animal good causes.  Both places do an amazing job, one for penguin conservation and the other for donkeys and horses in the townships.  I don't have a lot of time to give to them but I try to do my part through giving exposure on my blog whenever I get the opportunity.  Popped by the donks the other day and this is the look I received when we ran out of…

Chacma Baboons

At Cape Point there stands a little statue of a mother chacma Baboon with a baby riding on her back.  Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus) are intimately associated with the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope.  Baboons inside the Cape Point section of the Table Mountain National Parkpark has become somewhat of a tourist attraction.  Round about six troops either live entirely within the Cape Point section or use the section as part of their range.  The baboons in this area has…

International Penguin Day

The 25th of April is Internation Penguin Day and with Algoa Bay being home to the biggest population of African Penguins in the world I thought I would do a post to celebrate it. The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) is located in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve in Port Elizabeth and the staff and volunteers involved there do an amazing job in the conservation effort of this endangered specie. Why is 25 April celebrated as International Penguin…

The Lion Matches lion

When I saw this lion at Kuzuko Lodge near Port Elizabeth it immediately reminded me of the lion on the Lion Safety Matches logo.   There is a bit of a resemblance.

Snoozing

Don't you just want to cuddle up to him? Well I wouldn't dare, but this male white lion at Seaview Preditor Park does look very inviting to cuddle up with for a bit of a afternoon snooze.  Also just want to wish Drama Princess a happy 8th birthday today.  My little girl is getting big very quickly.

A couple of long necks

Kragga Kamma Game Park is the ideal spots to spend a weekend morning or afternoon.  Its nice and close to the city and you get to see a wide variety of animals from the comfort of your own car.  I always love seeing giraffes on any game drive and visiting Kragga Kamma is no different.

Under threat

There were 633 rhino's poached in South Africa in 2012.  It a very sad and shocking statistic and even with millions of rands collected for anti-poaching activities and millions of people made aware of the fact, it seems that the problem is still far from being solved.  This picture of a young white rhino was taken at one of the game reserves close to Port Elizabeth, but the poaching problem means that I just don't want to disclose which one.
