Harbour aerial

The Port Elizabeth harbour was built in 1933 after the completion of the Charl Malan Quay (No.1 Quay, now used as the Container and Car Terminals).  It is one of two harbours in Algoa Bay with the Coega Industrial Harbour being the other. The harbour wall can be seen on the right.  Going along the wall to the left is the tanker berth where the ships carrying fuel to the harbour docks and to the left of that (where the two…

Dune coastline aerial

Driving along the N2 from Port Elizabeth to Colchester you pass the Coega harbor and then it's a straight stretch to the Sundays River with not much to see on either side.  Have you ever driven that road and wondered what the coastline between the harbor and Sundays look like? I didn't get to see it up close but I did fly over it (and man was my arms tired - yes, old joke, I know) just after takeoff on our way…

City coastline aerial

Last week the Damselfly and I got to fly to Johannesburg for the annual Lilizela Awards of which I was one of the judges. Even though I get to road trip quite often working for ECTOUR, I don't fly nearly as much as I did in my previous job.  When I do and I fly alone, I like an aisle seat but the Damselfly wanted to sit by the window and it gave me the opportunity to snap a few pics…

Aerial video clips of the Donkin and beachfront

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1Xe1HtbjlY&w=500&h=400]While looking for a clip to post for this week's Video Friday I found this video on YouTube.  It involves aerial footage shot with a drone and a GoPro of the Donkin Reserve and the beachfront area. How I wish I had the money for a drone and GoPro.  Imagine the excellent footage I would be able to shoot on my travels.

Market Square aerial

I was very disappointed the day I saw that the municipality started to allow officials to use Market Square as a parking lot.  Tourists wanting to have a look around have to dodge cars and when you want to take a nice picture there is always a vehicle in the way.  Plus I don't think the paving put down on Market Square was done with a view that it would be come a parking lot so I'm sure at some stage…

Coega IDZ aerial

The last of the pictures I snapped returning to Port Elizabeth recently was of the Coega Industrial Development Zone.  The Coega Harbour is visible on the right and Motherwell on the left.

Coega Harbour aerial

Last weekend I posted aerial pictures of the Colchester dune fields and the Swartkops River area taken on my flight home from Indaba in Durban recently.  I've got two more pictures I took approaching Port Elizabeth which I would like to show.  Today's one is the Coega deep water port.  With the completion of the Coega Harbour Port Elizabeth became the first city in South Africa to have to commercial posts.

Swartkops River Estuary

Returning to Port Elizabeth on the same flight I snapped yesterday's Colchester dunefield on, I got this picture of the Sundays River estuary as one looks up towards Uitenhage from Algoa Bay.

Colchester dunefield

Most people living in Port Elizabeth has driven along the N2 past the Sundays River and Colchester at some stage in their lives and would have seen the sand dunes beyond the river.  But I want to bet that very few actually realise how big the dune fields out at Colchester really is.  Its huge, as you can see from the pic I snapped on the return flight from Indaba in Durban the other day.  The Colchester Dunefields are just the first…
