The Port Elizabeth Opera House was opened in 1892. This makes it both the oldest functional Opera House in the country as well as the only Victorian theatre in South Africa. The building boasts two theatres, The Barn which stages smaller plays while the main theatre plays host to big shows like operas, ballet and musical shows.

The Opera House looks like it’s a pretty new building, but I wonder if that’s accurate. Nice to be able to photograph without the nuisance of both moving and parked cars.
Oh thank you! I spent sooo many days and nights of grueling rehearsals and thrilling performances there, that just seeing it as though I were driving up to the door is a thrill like no other!
Great photo and great idea framing it like that. I REALLY need to get out earlier.
Wow – I don’t think I’ve EVER seen Whites Road that quiet. Oh, wait, maybe at 2 a.m. after a night of revelry at Cadillac Jacks…!I love the PE Opera House – a real gem, and I’d forgotten that magnificent ficus tree! Lovely shot and thanks for a treat from home on a Friday morning 🙂
Thank-you again for all your pictures!I have just thought wouldn't it be great to have a map of PE with all these photos on the map so we can see them on a map. This gets done on google maps but the map is rubbish! you'd really need a good maphttp://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=port+elizabeth+south+africa&sll=51.505217,-0.108747&sspn=0.019046,0.038624&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.961159,25.619001&spn=0.025379,0.038624&z=15&lci=lmc:panoramio

Kate it was built in 1892 and renovated in the 1960’s. It is a national monument.
Lovely building. It would be great fun to see a large production here. Nice contrast with the blue sky.
Nice building.
I love how this photo emphasises what a steep slope the building actually stands on – really unusual! I only realised how authentically Victorian the Opera House was when I came to London and saw all the Victorian theatres here! We are so lucky to have this wonderful building.
