On a recent exploration of the Russel Road Cemetery here in Port Elizabeth I found this very interesting grave stone cross. It kinda reminded me of a Celtic cross and probably got its inspiration from the Welsh connection amongst the 1820 British Settlers as the grave dates from the mid 1800's.
The Addo Elephant National Park is one of Port Elizabeth's biggest attractions. There is very few game viewing experiences that get close to having a big herd of elephants passing within arm's length of your car. There are few flowers, in my mind, that comes close to the aloe when in full flower. Driving through the countryside and seeing hundreds of these magnificent flowers in full bloom makes me want to stop and pull out my camera. This one I photographed in the Gamtoos Valley west of Port Elizabeth.
Lying just off the beach at Bloubergstrand in Cape Town for the last year or so is the wreck of the Turkish ship Seli 1. The Seli 1 apparently dropped anchor in Table Bay when the anchor broke off in large swells. The ship drifted towards shore and landed on a sandbank before being pushed onto rocks which punctured a hole in the side of the boat. Fortunately it didn't cause any pollution along the coastline. When I seriously need to get out the office and don't really have anywhere spicific I want to go, I pop up the street and take a walk in Victoria Park. Vic Park, named after Queen Victoria, is in lower Walmer and probably is one of Port Elizabeth's lesser know big parks.
My weekend in Cape Town was a bit of a dull and dreary one, so I didn't get to take too many bright pictures. Usually most photos concentrate on the Campanile from afar or looking up at it's top, so I decided to post one of the entrance. The Campanile was completed in 1922 on the landing beach where the British Settlers arrived in 1820. Once you enter this door, you still need to climb 204 steps to get to the top observation area for stunning views all around.
I found these flowers growing in St Mary's Cemetery the other day on one of my grave yard exploration trips. I'm not sure what they are, but any passer-by would have been very confused about this dude crawling around between the old graves.
