In the townships you get to see many unusual sites. Well, unusual for those of us not used to daily township life. One of those is seeing somebody prepare smileys. A smiley is the head of a sheep. It gets put into the fire to burn off all the hair and skin and then cooked. It is a traditional delicacy in the townships and a very popular dish. This lady was preparing smileys in Njoli Square.

Awesome! One very vivid memory of my time in South Africa was seeing smiley’s for the first time. You’ve captured this perfectly.
Oh dear. I think I’ll pass. Certainly an interesting photo, though.
Great pic
These guys have the best descriptive phrases in the townships. Another delicatesse is the “Walkie Talkie” – poultry head and feet.
Great pic – and I agree – Smileys and Walkie Talkies are just the best descriptive names for food!
In Gauteng we call it Skopo, once you get your hands on it, you will never go back. It’s been a while since I had one and now you made want to get one soon.
I am not sure I could handle a smiley/ skopo – the thought of my meal “watching” me would put me off.
Never seen that before, live and learn.
