Reflextion of blue

I have posted a lot of sunrise and sunset pictures for Skywatch Friday lately, so today I decided to look down to look up. I got this reflection in one of the river pools at Sleepy Hollow just outside Port Elizabeth on our last camping trip. The water was perfectly still and gave me the opportunity to get the perfect sky reflection. For more looking up (or down) sky pictures, visit Skywatch.

Camping at Sleepy Hollow

I really enjoy camping at Sleepy Hollow just outside Port Elizabeth and have done so a couple of times now. Its the perfect getaway from the city and only about 20 minutes away. It gives you the opportunity to get back to nature with the main thing you can do being going for walks up the valley. These campers were a group of friends that were camping just below us during our last stay.

Plumbago

I walked down this trail earlier in the morning and thought that the plumbago bush next to the road would make a nice feature in a picture of the path Unfortunately I had no subject to put in it until I walked it again a little later with the family.

First drift at Sleepy Hollow

I love camping at Sleepy Hollow just outside of Port Elizabeth. Its only 15 minutes from the city, yet its out in nature with a bit of indigenous forest growing along the Maitland River flowing through the valley in which Sleepy Hollow is situated. I have quite a lot of pics from Sleepy Hollow which I will post from time to time. Following the trail up the river one gets away from it all. Along the walk you cross the…

Sleepy Hollow caravan and camp site

Sleepy Hollow caravan park truly is one of Port Elizabeth's best kept secrets. It is situated in the Maitland River Valley and is a real get back to nature spot. That is if some idiot doesn't play his music loud enough for the whole camp to hear. But them you occasionally find in all camping areas. Sleepy Hollow has various short hiking trails with the main one following the Maitland River up the valley. Along the way are a few…

Waterfall pool

This will be the last Sleepy Hollow pics posted for now. A couple of hundred meters up from the camping area the gorge splits in two with the main stream flowing into it from the left hand side. The right hand section is a fairly narrow gorge leading up to a small waterfall. To get to it takes a bit of scrambling over rocks and boulders, but at the top is a peaceful spot. The waterfall may not be the…

Maitlands River gorge

The Maitlands River flows through Sleepy Hollow and part of the property is situated in the Maitlands gorge. This is seen from one of the view points at the top of the gorge. Its hard to believe that this is situated just outside the city limits of Port Elizabeth but still within the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area.

Spooky mine entrance

On the western outskirts of Port Elizabeth in the Maitlands area are several old abandoned silver and lead mines that date back to the late 1700's. Personally I know of two places that has some of the old mines on their properties. The one is Maitlands Mines and the other one Sleepy Hollow. We camped at Sleepy Hollow two weeks ago and had a wonderful time. (Read more about our visit here). At Sleepy Hollow there are three of these…

Sulphur Tuft mushrooms

When you see a scene like this you tend to want to sit down and just watch quietly to see when the pixies and fairies arrive. These are Sulphur Tuft mushrooms. They normally grow on dead hardwood trees and can be up to 70 millimetres in diameter. The stems are 50 - 200 x 2 - 10 millimetres and join to other stems at the base. These I also photographed at Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow

Driving out to Sleepy Hollow just outside Port Elizabeth on a drizzling Thursday, my mind wandered to the tale of Ichabod Crane. I wondered if at some stage during the weekend I would encounter a headless horseman who would hurl his head (or some shape of pumpkin) at me making me throw myself into a bush or a stream. Or even worse, disappear forever. But luck was on my side. Three days of absolute natural bliss and not a wandering…
