Grey Institute windows

The Grey Institute across the road from the Donkin Reserve was completed in 1859 and housed Grey High School until 1915 when they moved to their present site in Mill Park.  Since then the building housed Pearson High School (now in Summerstrand) and then the Albert Jackson Primary School.  Since it was bought by the Mediterranean Shipping Company the building has had extensive renovations done to it although the historic look and feel was kept.  When I got to visit a little…

Priory Fair

Today's post is a case of better late than never.  The reason for being late is the Mohair series I posted last week which started before I downloaded the pictures I took last weekend.  Last Saturday (26 May) the annual Priory Fair took place at St Dominic's Priory.  The Priory Fair is probably the most popular school "fete" in Port Elizabeth and I am just amazed at how many people support it.  We were there early for the book sale…

Track bell

This time of the year all the schools are doing their inter-school athletics and Chaos Boy's school was no different.  After sitting through a long boring day on the stands last year, I volunteered to help with time keeping this year to get the time to pass faster.  I had a very enjoyable day, but I totally forgot to take the one photo I planned for the day.  I wanted the same pic as above, but just as the long…

Nativity Play

Its that time of the year when all little angels don their wings, wise men pick up their gifts, shepherds collect their sheep and mini Joseph and Mary head for the two chairs in the middle of the stage that represents Bethlehem.  Most pre-primary schools and Sunday schools stage a short nativity play this time of year at their end of year prize givings.  Everybody always tries something slightly different so that the kids don't feel like its always the…

Grey Institute

The Grey Institute across the road from the Donkin Reserve was built in 1859 with the clock tower being added in 1875. The land on which it stands was made available by the then governor of the Cape Colony, Sir George Grey, for a school to be built on. Grey School got too big for the old building and moved to its present site in Mill Park in the early 1900's after which the old building was used by a…

Township school

Most of the tour operators doing township tours in Port Elizabeth support a school or other worthwhile project by visiting them on the tour and contributing to them financially. One of the schools visited by probably the biggest township tour operator in the city, Calabash Tours, is the New Brighton Primary School. On the visit to the school the visitors get taken through some of the classes to see the kids work before having tea and being told how they…

St Georges Prep School

Across the road from the oldest Test cricket stadium in South Africa, St Georges Park, stand the St Georges Preparatory School. Knockfierna (Hill of Fairies or Truth) was originally built as a beautiful grand Victorian Mansion by John Daverin, from Ireland, who was a successful Wool Merchant, in 1899. John and his wife, Clothilda, brought up their 7 children in the grand style befitting this era.John Daverin died in 1922, and Knockfierna was sold to James Harroway who later sold…

Township choir

Most of the tour operators doing township tours have projects that they support. Somewhere along the tour they would stop at a school, creche or feeding scheme for a visit. A portion of the tour's income also gets donated to that specific project. Most of the time the tourists would also open their hearts and wallets and in this way many worthy projects in the townships keep afloat. Here a group of tourists are listening to the New Brighton SDA…

Primary Schools Rugby

On Saturday we stopped at Walmer West Primary School just down the road from us to watch a bit of primary schools rugby. They were having a sports day and various schools were playing both rugby and netball against each other. As we got there the under 13 teams of Walmer West Primary in the blue and Excelsior Primary on the orange and green took to the field. The boys in the Walmer West team was a lot bigger than…

Mill Park #4

The most well known feature of Mill Park is the Grey School. Here we are looking at the back, from a viewpoint in Mill Park, across one of the tributaries of the Baakens River, which has created many interesting ravines around the perimeter of the suburb. Note the security vehicle parked under the tree. A downside of the ravines is that they provide easy exit points for housebreakers to disappear into, so high walls, armed response, electric fences etc have…
