Brookes on the Bay’s view

The new restaurants at Brookes-on-the-Bay have some of the best views of any of the restaurants along the beachfront with views across Kings Beach.  At night you may not be able to see as far out to sea, but the harbour and city lights also make for a magnificent backdrop.

Ocean Basket at Brookes on the Bay

With the redevelopment of Brookes Pavilion (now called Brookes-on-the-Bay) completed, the new tenants have started to move in.  One of the first restaurants to open was Ocean Basket and I'm sure with the fantastic view it has over the beachfront its sure to become one of Port Elizabeth's most popular seafood restaurants.

Game Lodge cuisine

The lodges on the private game reserves around Port Elizabeth doesn't just dish up the most amazing game sightings, but also some of the most delectable foods you can imagine. Best of all is that non two are the same. Visitors are treated to royal meals three times a day with high teas and sundowner game drive snacks in between as well. This was part of the starters we had on a visit to Pumba Game Reserve a little while…

Plane on a pillar

One of the slightly unusual sights outside the Port Elizabeth Airport is an Impala MkI sitting on top of a pillar next to Aviators Pub and Grill. It kinda looks like a scene from a SciFi movie with a spaceship docked at a space diner. The Impalas were used as training aircraft by the SA Airforce in the past and this one got a prime spot to retire at..For more pictures from cameras pointing upwards, visit Skywatch.

Tolbos Country and Coffee Shop

The Gamtoos River Valley is a beautiful area just west of Port Elizabeth. It is a farming area producing mainly citrus and potatoes and an awesome option for a weekend or day getaway out of the city and into the scenic countryside. At the heart of the Gamtoos Valley is the town of Patensie and right at the entrance of the town is Tolbos Country and Coffee Shop.Tolbos is a real country shop and you will find everything from home…

Boardwalk outside dining

On a nice sunny day one of the best places to have lunch or just a coffee or a drink is one of the outside seating areas belonging to the restaurants at the Boardwalk. Its normally quite difficult getting an outside seat overlooking the Boardwalk lake at a place like Dulcé. Suddenly I wish I was sitting there and not here in front of my computer.

Dinner on the coals

Most of the private game reserves around Port Elizabeth serve traditional South African foods to their guests. Some make it in their kitchens while others do it out in the open on the coals. At Schotia Safaris they prepare the food in their outside lapa in full sight of their guests. Schotia's owner, Peter Bean, are very hands on in everything that happens on the reserve and in the picture he is braaiing (barbecuing) the lamb chops, chicken sosaties (kebabs)…

Bramon Wine Estate

Traveling down the Garden Route the other day we stopped at Bramon Wine Estate at The Crags just outside Plettenberg Bay. Bramon was the first wine estate this far east of the Cape Winelands and produces a superior Sauvignon Blanc 'cap classique' sparkling wine. The beauty of Bramon is that the seating for their restaurant is set in the vineyards and visitors can enjoy local wines with cheeses, meats, oysters, pates and homemade bread with the majestic Tsitsikamma mountains in…

Pirates

On my visit to Durban this week we went to Upper Deck Restaurant in the Phantom Ship at uShaka Marine. The restaurant is in a ship and the theme is very nautical. Unfortunately it was evening and thus dark, so I couldn't really get good shots of the ship.

Three Pagaodas

The Three Pagodas Road House, in Kabega Park, is one of the few remaining road houses in Port Elizabeth. It seem like a life time since we were last there, but it should bring back memories for a lot of Port Elizabethans who like Chinese cuisine and have visited the place over the years.
