St Georges Prep School

Across the road from the oldest Test cricket stadium in South Africa, St Georges Park, stand the St Georges Preparatory School. Knockfierna (Hill of Fairies or Truth) was originally built as a beautiful grand Victorian Mansion by John Daverin, from Ireland, who was a successful Wool Merchant, in 1899. Pyramid

To the memoryof one of the most perfectof human beingswho has given her nameto the Town below The plaque on the Donkin Memorial (Donkin Pyramid) on the Donkin Reserve. The pyramid was put up as a monument by Sir Rufane Donkin in remembrance of his wife, Lady Elizabeth Donkin. Sir Rufan named Port Elizabeth after his wife on his visit to Algoa Bay in 1820.

Sleepy Hollow

Driving out to Sleepy Hollow just outside Port Elizabeth on a drizzling Thursday, my mind wandered to the tale of Ichabod Crane. I wondered if at some stage during the weekend I would encounter a headless horseman who would hurl his head (or some shape of pumpkin) at me making me throw myself into a bush or a stream. Harbour sunrise

I was very fortunate to spend some time with a film crew shooting footage for the FIFA host city profiles to be broadcasted during 2010 recently. I did have to get up really early a couple of mornings as the guys wanted to get various good sunrise locations. Horse-a-flutter

Spending some time with the FIFA city profile film crew last week gave me the opportunity to observe the camera men very closely which gave me a lot of tips to try with my own photography. SAMREC

I popped down to SAMREC in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve the other day to have a look at their new facilities. The South African Marine Rehabilitation Centre, SAMREC, has built a rehabilitation centre at Cape Recife to care for the sick and injured Marine Life of Algoa Bay and neighbouring coast line. Although they will specialise in marine birds, they will also rescue and look after mammals if it is required of them (and obviously if their facilities allow…

Dodd’s Farm

After spending last Sunday morning in Settlers Park , we headed over to Dodds Farm a little higher up the Baakens Valley in the afternoon. I've been there before, but the Damselfly and the Rugrats hadn't. Its also on the banks of the Baakens River with cliffs and lots of trees. And best of all, like Settlers Park, its a stone's throw from the suburbs.

Settlers Park wild flowers

We spent most of Sunday in various parts of Settlers Park enjoying this magnificent natural area right here in the heart of Port Elizabeth.
