Something Good Graffiti – the alien head

This piece of graffiti in front of Something Good really caught my attention.  Not because of it's size or the colours or artistic techniques, but rather the subject.  Not quite ET, not quite Gollum. Whoevere and whatever he is, he's clearly fascinated by that fishing hook he's holding.

Something Good Graffiti – Octopus

I had a meeting at Something Good at Pollok Beach the other day and just had to snap a pic of the graffiti on the walls in front of the restaurant.  Graffiti has gone huge in Johannesburg and we have a lot of catching up to do here in PE.  Some people love it while others don't, but love or hate, a piece like this does make you stop and take notice.

Framed fishing boat

Last Sunday there was a cold wind blowing and it really wasn't beach weather.  Saturday afternoon already the Damselfly said that she wanted to go for a walk on the beach Sunday so come the day she wasn't going to allow the weather to put her off.  The walk was very short though but I still took the opportunity to snap a pic or two.  One of those was this one of a fishing boat at anchor in the bay…

Golden morning

In Afrikaans there is a saying, "Die môrestond het goud in die mond" which is the same as "The early bird catches the worm."  The Afrikaans one has more relevance to this picture.

Stadium view from the beach

You know how it can happen that you see something every day without registering that you've actually seen it.  A good example is a fading sign outside a building.  You don't always realise its faded until somebody points it out to you and you have a proper look.  Well, I think the view of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium from the beachfront is one of those.  How many people actually notice the stadium beyond the harbour when they are walking along…

Where did Pollok Beach get its name?

Have you ever wondered where Pollok Beach got its name from?  For a start, it is supposed to be spelled Pollok without the "c" so it definitely wasn't named after Graham Pollock.  I found the source of the name on the Millers Local blog.  Pollok Beach was named after the Pollok Hotel that used to stand where the present Summerseas is today.  The Pollok Hotel later became the old Summerstrand Hotel which was demolished and made way for Summerseas.  The original building dated back to the 1890’s, when…

Bird Rock

One of the natural landmarks along the Port Elizabeth beachfront is Bird Rock between Hobie Beach and Pollok Beach.  The rock is always surrounded by water making it an island of sort and got it's name from the fact that there are always a number of birds sitting on it.  Bird Rock is also home to one of the city's terrain 5 Geocaches.  One I need to go and replace as it seems to have washed off after rough seas…

Surfers heading into the sea at Pipe

Port Elizabeth may not be Jeffreys Bay when it comes to being famous for surfing, but we do have a couple of half decent surf spots.  Pipe next to Pollok Beach are one of those and I snapped these two surfers heading into the waves there a little while ago.
