Ice Cream Man

"Ting ting ting ting..." You can hear the ice cream man's bell way down the block long before you can even see him yet. I remember when I was small my folks often bought ice cream from the ice cream man on a Sunday afternoon. But over the years the ice cream man has disappeared off our streets. Until now. Lately this guy has been doing the rounds through our neighbourhood on Sundays. Every now and then we buy ice…

we meet at last ….

We are approaching our 500th post on this blog, so I thought it might be fun for you to meet us, and see some of the antics we have got up to in the interests of documenting our city for this blog....Sue uses the tripod to help climb out of a graveyard after a sunrise stroll....while Max does a quick battery change on board the visiting Portuguese ship Sagres, with a fascinated grandson looking on.

Parliament Street afterparty

This isn't the greatest photo, again the light was green in our favour and there was no time to compose or zoom. It was taken recently from the intersection of Russell Road and Rink Street just before 5am on a Saturday. The Parliament Street all night party begins to ease up, and the last revellers converge on the apron of the Service Station across the road, dancing to music that blares from various cars. All this would be quite festive if…

Farewell brave lady….

Yesterday flags in South Africa flew at half mast in honour of Helen Suzman, who for many years was the lone opposition voice in Parliament, speaking out against Apartheid. She died last week at age 91, and leaves behind a proud legacy.Helen Suzman has always been a hero in our eyes, the way she bravely stood her ground when all those Nat chauvinists were giving her a hard time, yet never lost her dignity or humanity or integrity was so…

Township kiddies

If you ever go on a proper Township Tour the guide will probably take you to one of the local schools or creches that their company supports. One of the tours I went on a little while ago took us to a community project that started as a feeding scheme for small children and developed into a day care and pre-school. Although the tour company gives the project a percentage of the fee that tourists pay for the tour, visitors…

A stroll down the street

I wonder how many City Centres are so laid back that a dad can stroll with his son down the street like this! The houses running down the steep hill, to their right, are the back of the famous Donkin Terrace, which we have featured quite regularly. In front is the harbour breakwater with its warning beacon on the end.
