Horse Memorial sillouette

If there is something I have a soft spot for as a photographer then its a sunset. You can never get tired of the sun disappearing over the horizon with its coinciding oranges, yellows, blues and purples along with a beautiful afterglow. Even better is when you can find a nice subject to put in the foreground to compliment the sunset. In this case the Horse Memorial here in Port Elizabeth. For more sunsets and other sky related photos, visit Skywatch.

1000 posts

Today is Port Elizabeth Daily Photo's 1000th post and exactly 500 posts since I took over from Sue and Max. Port Elizabeth is such a magnificent place that I struggle most days to select a photo out of my collection to post. I just want to take this opportunity to thank all the regular PEDP visitors as well as those who only pop in every now and then, doesn't matter if you comment on the pics on not, for taking…

Concentration Camp Memorial

Kemsley Park next to the SAP sports fields just off Mount Road was one of two Anglo Boer War concentration camp sites in Nelson Mandela Bay. The other one is situated just outside Uitenhage. Roché Petersen has pointed out to me in a previous post that the dead from the concentration camp was buried in the North End Cemetery where there also is a memorial. The Prince Alfred Guard sergeant-major

This memorial forms the central ornamental feature of the Service Reservoir. On the top of the central pedestal is a life-size figure of a sergeant-major of Prince Alfred's Guard, in full dress and standing at the "charge" and immediately below him are four lions, each holding a shield. The memorial is in remembrance to men…

Angled Horse Memorial

I know I have posted various photos of the Horse Memorial before, but with my last visit there the little gate in the fence surrounding the memorial was open. This gave me the opportunity to get right up to it and take a pic at a different angle to the others that I have taken before.

Cenotaph

The Cenotaph in front of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Gallery was sculptured in 1929 by James Gardener to commemorate those from Port Elizabeth who died in the first World War between 1914 and 1918. It features St George buckling his sword after slaying the dragon, as well as the figure of a mother and her children. Later the names of those who fell in World War Two (1939 - 1945) were added.

Uitenhage Concentration Camp

On Thursday I did a post on the Concentration Camp Memorial in Port Elizabeth and mentioned that there is one outside Uitenhage as well and that I will post a pic of it at a later stage. If I have to leave it till later I will probably forget about it, so here it is. The memorial can be found at the show grounds just north of the town.
