Humewood slipway from the sea

The Jester has opened up a whole new world of sightseeing in Port Elizabeth for those who don't have access to a boat to see the beachfront and city from the bay.  This is Humewood Beach with the old slipway pillars in the foreground and the Town Lodge Hotel in the back.

Humewood flood damage

Port Elizabeth is experiencing its wettest non-flood year on record (the second wettest of all time only after the 1968 floods) and we've still got another two months to go till the end of the year.  Looking at all the flooding we've had they can just as well declare this year a flood year as well, but that's not my call.  With the huge rains we had a week or so ago even the docile Shark River that flows through Happy Valley came…

Jumping dolphin in Happy Valley

Summer is getting closer and soon December will be here and the lights in Happy Valley back on.  We attended the Bay TV birthday celebrations on Heritage Day this past Monday and the Kidz said that they can't wait to go and see the characters when the lights are on again.

Perfect evening on the Town Lodge deck

The movers and shakers in the tourism industry in Port Elizabeth were invited to a function at the Town Lodge on the beachfront last week for the introduction of the new ceo of Ectour.  But that's not what the post is about.  The function took place on the Town Lodge's deck overlooking Humewood Beach in absolutely perfect weather.  Port Elizabeth is often called the Windy City.  The reason for that is that we do get a fair amount of wind…

Shining on the slipway

Early morning sunshine by the old slipway at Humewood Beach. Humewood is the oldest Blue Flag beach in South Africa and has just been re awarded its Blue Flag status for the coming summer season. Visit Skywatch for more photos of the sky

Beach and skyline

This photograph was taken from Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach looking towards town. I didn't take it to show a different angle of the old slipway at Humewood , although it is, but rather to show the Port Elizabeth skyline with the new giant South African flag on the Donkin Reserve which I featured in a post last week.

Old Slipway at Humewood Beach

I always find the old slipway at Humewood Beach a very interesting feature on the Port Elizabeth beachfront. The slipway was used for boat repairs before the PE Harbour was built in the 1930's. Boats sailed in between the pillars before being pulled onto the slipway. Today its a very popular snorkeling spot and used by most dive schools for their students' first dives.

Asterix and Obelix

Happy Valley just off Humewood Beach is a wonderland of note for any child and on of Port Elizabeth's oldest (oldest not as in historic but as in something that has been there like forever) attractions. In summer the valley is lit up with colourful lights while all along the pathway visitors will find all kinds of children story and rhyme characters. Happy Vally is an institution with parents taking their kids to a place where they have gone as…
