Then and Now – Humewood Beach

Humewood Beach is one of Port Elizabeth's flagship beaches and one that is popular with just about everybody.  Being a Blue Flag Beach it has to adhere to international standards of safety and cleanliness and with the bridge overhead creating shade and nearby parking it's a great family beach.  But where did Humewood get it's name from and has it always been popular beach?Humewood Beach obviously got it's name from the suburb of Humewood which in turn was named after William…

Splish Splash

A late Saturday afternoon walk along the beachfront and the water looked very inviting.  Unfortunately we were on our way to friends for dinner and I didn't have my costume on.  I did have my camera though.

Surf wall

I've never really thought about the wall leading into the sea between Denville Beach and Humewood Beach till I was standing on it this afternoon.  Why is it there?  My guess was that it encloses a pipe and once I guessed that I wondered if it isn't the pipe that was used to pump water from the sea to the old dolphin pool at the Oceanarium.

Slipway at dusk

The old Humewood slipway is one of the city's landmarks  that often pop in in photos of the beachfront.  Oh look, it just popped up again.

Stormy beachfront

Last week we had some stormy weather pass over Port Elizabeth. Rain, cold and very rough and high seas were the order of the day.  I stopped on my way to work one morning and this was the scene looking towards Humewood and Hobie Beaches.

The Humewood Slipway

The Humewood Slipway must surely be as well known a beachfront landmark as Shark Rock Pier is.  The difference being that most people probably don't know what it actually is.  The iron and cement structures just of Humewood Beach used to be the city's dry dock used for boat repairs and service before the harbor was built in the 1930's.  These days is doesn't serve any shipping purpose anymore but has become a man made reef attracting fish which in…

Pebbles on Denville Beach

Going to the beach in Port Elizabeth usually means heading to Kings Beach, Humewood, Hobie Beach or Sardinia Bay.  There are many little beaches and corners in between like Denville Beach next to McArthur Pools.  Denville is a popular spot for beginner surfers but not that frequently used by bathers as the surrounding beaches.  Denville and Humewood Beach is separated by rocks and I photographed these pebbles on the beach as we were heading towards those rocks on a day of beach exploration.

Checking out the beachfront

This year our December summer holiday was supposed to be a mountain vacation and we were due to leave for four days in Matatiele on Tuesday before heading into the Southern Drakensberg for another 10 days there after.  We had a very unexpected and sudden hiccup crop up this week and the Damselfly has to head into hospital for surgery.  It means that we will be spending our vacation at home while she recuperates and I'm sure the beach will see the KidZ…

Happy Valley is still around

One of the things that irritate me most are people who goes around pretending to be so passionate about Port Elizabeth but uses every opportunity they get to ridicule, belittle and critisise it around every corner.  One of the only things that irritate me even more than that are those people who always say there is nothing to do or see in the city.  And when you combine the two above... Gosh, don't let me start. Over the last month or…
