Knysna forest roads

The are two ways of exploring the indigenous forests around Knysna, by car and on foot. Several forest roads take one all over the forests surrounding Knysna from down by the Knysna River up to Gouna, across to Millwood and over the Prince Alfred Pass.  The road in the picture is called Kom se Pad.The best way to really connect with the forest is by going on one of the many hiking trails criss crossing throughout the forest. Decaying branch

I am always amazed at the wonders of nature, specially when finding bracket fungus somewhere in a forested area. Bracket fungus plays such an important roll in the forest's circle of life. It helps to decompose wood which get fed back into the soil to add nutrients to it. And of cause it makes for very interesting photographs, specially when its brightly coloured like the ones in the picture.

Moss covered log

I found this moss covered old fallen tree in the Tsitsikamma forest. The moss felt like a carpet when I ran my hand across it. I took a picture of the tree without the "crack" as well, but felt it looked better with it included.

Plaatbos Nature Reserve

The section of indigenous forest next to Storms River Village through which the Storms River Pass runs is called Plaatbos Nature Reserve. It used to be under the control of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, but now forms part of the Tsitsikamma National Park under the control of SANParks.
