Cricket at St George’s

The first One Day International of the cricket series between South Africa and Sri Lanka took place here in Port Elizabeth today and I was there.  It's been a while since I've been to an international cricket game and it was really a treat being able to go and enjoy it with Drama Princess.  Other than the fact that the South African's totally dominates the day, the other thing that really caught my attention was how diverse the crowd was.…

Athletics at the Oval

Drama Princess' school had their interhouse athletics at the Oval today and I volunteered to help out on track side.  Arriving and walking onto the track immediately brought back memories of my own school athletics days.  The smell of the tartan track, kids singing on the stand, cheers for the runners, chants of "hou bene hou" (hold legs hold) during the long distance events and so many other little things one seem to forget when you don't do it anymore.…

Saturday morning parkrun

We've started doing the weekly Hobie Beach parkrun as a family, both to get us all active and more fitter as well as for the Discovery Vitality points.  Chaos Boy is running a lot faster than what I've ever been able to do while the Damselfly is walking it at this stage as she's not in 100% shape after her last ops yet.  Drama Princess isn't a slouch and at 11 is doing the 5 km at about the same…

Expedition Africa Baviaans 2017 promo

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15kOffwlrR4&w=500&h=400]Expedition Africa is the South African leg of the Adventure Racing World Series.  A race normally covers a distance of about 500 km during which teams of four (usually three men and a woman) cover the distance by running, cycling, paddling, swimming, climbing and doing rope work.  The teams have to plot the easiest way from check point to check point and the top teams barely stop to sleep over the five days it takes them to cover the distance.…

Ironman 70.3 World Champs coming to Port Elizabeth in 2018

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IadgC9ls0k&w=500&h=400]Probably one of the biggest pieces of sport news of the year broke about two or three weeks ago when Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay was announced at hosts for the Ironman 70.3 (also known as Half Ironman) World Champs in 2018.  The event is even bigger than the annual Ironman African Championship that takes place in the city and attracts over 3 000 competitors from around 70 countries along with all their families, supporters as well as international…

Lilizela Tourism Awards 2016

The Lilizela Tourism Awards organised by South African Tourism and hosted by the Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, took place in the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg tonight (16 October 2016).  This year I was invited to be one of the judges for the third year in a row and it really is a great privilege to be asked to be part of the adjudication process.  The Lilizela Awards are South Africa's premier tourism awards and those products who walk…

Coastal cleanup with the local Geocachers

Every year thousands of people worldwide pitch in and do their bit on International Coastal Cleanup Day.  Anualy thousands of tons of garbage winds up in the oceans, with 60% of that being composed of plastic material. Plastics especially last a very long time in the ocean, and are in such abundance that there are 46,000 individual pieces of plastic litter for every square mile of ocean. Plastics are very hazardous to marine life, killing more than a million birds…

#womenintourism breakfast

This morning I had the honour and privilege to be involved in the organising and execution of the Port Elizabeth leg of the Travel Massive / National Department of Tourism #womenintourism breakfast event at the Summerstrand Hotel.  It coincided with Women's Month and we made use of the opportunity to celebrate the involvement of women in the tourism industry.  The theme of the event was Doek on Fleek and most of the women in attendance were wearing a doek with…
