Donkin Reserve view

The view from the Donkin Reserve looking towards the Port Elizabeth harbour. The building in the left bottom is the Opera House. There are three towers visible. From left to right they are the City Hall, the Old Post Office and St Augustine's Catholic Cathedral. The building with the little pointy bits along its edge is Plein Huis.

By request………

Pule asked us to show Govan Mbeki looking the other way from the City Hall towards North End. Why are robots only green when you WANT a red light? I was late for a meeting and did not have time to find parking and walk back. So this is the best we could do as we had to go with the traffic flow.

This was taken this morning. The street was not as busy as one would expect for a Saturday morning, maybe it will change once all the building operations are complete further down, we'll show that tomorrow,

Govan Mbeki

We were recently asked to show the upgraded Govan Mbeki Street. This is a composite shot, showing the view back towards the city hall, and showing one of the new street vendor's shelters.

Zooming In….

....on yesterday's view, and the harbour and city centre are magically transformed into an ethereal fairyland by the wonderful early morning light.

The Opera House

Ok, not the view you would expect, of the front of the building, this is backstage, so to speak! Taken from the Donkin reserve, overlooking the cliff on Whites Road, and the roof of the Opera House, to the city below. The dome of City Hall peeps over the roof in the centre, while the steeple of St Augustine's is to the right.

Then and Now #3

Gaston has been finding more fascinating old photos for us. This is Govan Mbeki Ave as it looked in 1953 ........ (it was the only place in town to go shopping, long before de-centralisation took place)And as it looks now, with the recent development into a pedestrian mall with shaded lock-up trading shelters for the street traders.

Then and Now #2

Again, many thanks to Gaston from France, who sent some of his pictures, taken when he lived here in the late 50s early 60s, and enabled us to do this comparative series. This is St Augustine's Cathedral, taken in 1960. And here it is this week. As with the Campanile view, I really question whether "progress" has brought around any improvement. The lovely gardens and fountain in front of City Hall, with natural stone paving, has been replaced by a…
