Pleinhuis

There is quite a number of interesting and historic buildings in the area around Market Square in the city centre. One of those which is just across the road from the City Hall is Pleinhuis. The building belongs to the municipality and houses amongst others the offices of the portfolio councillors on the mayoral committee. Like so many other buildings built in Port Elizabeth at that time, Pleinhuis was built in the Art Deco style. When I passed it the…

Library emblem

Taking a walk around the city centre the other day, I noticed this feature on the side of the Main Library building facing St Mary's Church. The emblem in the middle is Port Elizabeth's old coat of arms, but I found the knight at the top to be quite a peculiar site. Oh and, is that a gargoyle I see at the bottom? Not many of them around town.

Gargoyle birds

On the top of Plein Huis across the road from Market Square there is a number ornamental birds. They actually look like they should rather be Gargoyles than birds, but what do I know about those ugly fellas that usually sit on top of buildings scanning the ground? My theory for these birds are that they were put there to stop actual birds from sitting on the top of the building messing on the walls and possible the heads of…

City Hall tree

I had to pop down into the city centre this week and found this tree in front of the City Hall with all its bright red fruit, flowers, fruity flowers (sorry, but I don't really know if they were the tree's fruit or flowers). As I was walking past it and I found a very nice angle to include it in a picture of the historic City Hall. Never leave home without your camera.

Freeways

This is the view from the top of the Campanile out of the window facing north. The three lane freeway is the Settlers Freeway which connects the beachfront area to most of the city as well as the N2 highway out of town. The buildings on the left is part of the city centre while the bottom right of the picture is the Port Elizabeth Station. In the back the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is visible with the mountains beyond…

King P Fashion Design

Another one of the street vendors (see Fruit Vendor) from Govan Mbeki Avenue in the city centre. This dude does alterations to clothes and the fact that he is using a antique Singer machine just fascinated me. The sign in front of his table says: King P Fashion Design - Alteration. I know this is Port Elizabeth Daily Photo (as in one photo a day), but I couldn't resist placing a second pic just to show where his stall is…

Govan Mbeki Road traders

About a year or so ago the municipality had the top section of Govan Mbeki Road (previously Main Street) up to the City Hall developed into a pedestrian walkway with stalls and space for street traders to work from. The actual street is now a one lane one way towards the City Hall just behind the traders (towards the right hand side of the photo). A lot of the stalls are still empty, but there is loads of potential for…

Love This Place

The big "LOVE THIS PLACE" banner went up on the side of Brister House in the city centre a little while ago and I think it's awesome. Brister House is one of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's main office buildings and is one of the highest buildings in town. I love Port Elizabeth with a passion and when I pass the building on the freeway and see it, its like a reminder (not that I need reminding) how much I…

Nelson Mandela Birthday

Today is Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday. We are very fortunate here in Port Elizabeth that we live in a metropolitan area carrying his name. Port Elizabeth along with the towns of Uitenhage, Despatch and Colchester forms part of Nelson Mandela Bay. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Qunu near Mthata (Umtata) in the Eastern Cape. He is also known worldwide as Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan.Mandela was an…
