Coastal City art exhibition

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (previously the King George VI Art Gallery) currently has a very interesting exhibition going called Coastal City.  The majority of the pieces on display are historic and fairly old, but that is what I loved about it.  My favorite painting on display is one done by Thomas Baines in 1853 called "The British Settlers of 1820 Landing in Algoa Bay".

Mosaic

The massive mosaic art piece that has been created next to the Donkin Memorial and lighthouse as part of the Route 67 development has become one of the most interesting new art pieces on the Donkin Reserve.  It creates a very nice approach from the flag pole to the pyramid and is best viewed from the top of the lighthouse.

Aya’s garden

In yesterday's post I wrote about Aya's Ceramic Studio in New Brighton.  Visiting Aya's studio one immediately realises how artistic she is.  Her studio, house and garden is one big exhibition area for her art with ceramic pieces scattered and placed all over.

Aya’s Ceramic Studio

A lot of artists like to settle somewhere close to the coast, in the mountains, a forest or a little town in the Karoo to draw inspiration from their environment to channel into their art.  Then there are people like Ayanda (Aya) Mji who lives in the heart of the New Brighton township of Port Elizabeth and who draws her inspiration from the African landscape around her.  She uses animals, birds and even her dreams to create some of the most interesting ceramic art…

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

As today is National Heritage Day here in South Africa, I want to feature the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum which is situated at the entrance to St Georges Park. The museum was opened in 1956 and was formerly known as the King George VI Art Gallery. The collections are housed in two buildings flanking the entrance to the park and consist of South African art (particularly that of the Eastern Cape), British art, international printmaking and Oriental art (including…

Art in the Park

In August last year I did a post on Art in the Park that takes place in St Georges Park every first Sunday of the month. Gavin Tonks, the founder of Art in the Park, commented on the post and gave some information on how it started. Seeing that this weekend has the first Sunday of the month and that Art in the Park will be taking place, I thought I would post Gavin's comment.Gavin Tonks said ..."I actually started…

Anton Momberg sculpture at sunrise

The Donkin Reserve is currently undergoing a major revamping project. Part of the project is a number of art pieces that will be added to the Donkin. The first of these pieces to have gone up was a sculpture by local artist Anton Momberg. Visit Skywatch for more pictures featuring the sky.

“For the love of the game” Art soccer balls

There is currently an exhibition called "For the love of the game" on the go in the newly revamped lighthouse keeper's cottage on the Donkin Reserve. (I will do a series of posts on the "new look" Donkin Reserve after the World Cup). The exhibit consists of decorated paper soccer balls done by art students of the Art Enrichment Programme and the PE Montessori School. The kids were given the clean balls and were allowed to decorate them in any…

Watercolours exhibition

EPSAC is currently hosting an Watercolours exhibition by the East Cape Watercolour Association. I popped in on Friday to have a quick look and was quite impressed with some of the work on show. For anybody looking for the perfect Christmas gift for an art lover, this is the place to come and buy something. And best of all are the prices. The majority of the paintings range from about R150 (US$18.50 or 12.50 British pounds) to R450 (US$56 or…

4 Women

I popped into the EPSAC gallery a day or so ago to have a look at the 4 WOMEN exhibition that is currently on. Esme Goosen, Rina Badenhorst, Roma Cloete and Sue Hoppe (who some of you will remember as one part of SAM, my predecessor on PEDP), who each have strong and distinctive styles, are presenting a group exhibition of their recent work. A feature of this exhibition is that some of the artists will set up a still…
