Plein Air Painting

A group of local artists get together each week for a bit of plein air painting (painting in the open, on the spot, rather than from photos). This morning we went to a dairy farm along Kragga Kamma Road, on the outskirts of town, and painted the dam, and beautiful spotted local cattle called Ngunis. It was great to be part of this group, a good mixture of fun, sharing skills and being productive, not to mention the pure joy…

Sculptor at work

Graham Jones is one of the really good Eastern Cape sculptors. He has almost finished a wonderful commission which is to be placed at the East London Museum. Luckily he lives just around the corner from us, so I was able to get a photo of it before it leaves P.E., all 4 and a half tons of it! It is made of cast iron with all sorts of fascinating bits and pieces attached. This is another in a series…

She’s no longer alone…………

Some time ago on Arty Fartying Around, I featured a delightful piece of street art that had appeared in Port Elizabeth. A group of trees had been felled near the golf driving range in Walmer, and the logs left lying around.Someone with a brilliant eye and lateral thinking ability spotted the potential for one to become a reclining woman, and painted a white dotty bikini on her. She brought a smile to many of us as we spotted her lying…

March 2008 Theme Day: Graffiti or street mural

The retaining wall of the Grand Hotel, on Whites Road, has a delightful mural depicting the Jazz Cafe inside. Sadly, the damp in the wall means it is deteriorating fast, so we are lucky to catch it while we still can. We featured another section of this mural in a previous post. Many others around the world are participating in this theme, so to see more fascinating street art, do pop in and pay them a visit.Adelaide, Australia by Gordon, Albuquerque…

Wire artists

Most Zimbabweans seem to have an inate artistic flair. It is always inspiring travelling there and being surrounded by so much creativity. Sadly, these days, due to the desperate situation in their county, over 3 million have fled to South Africa looking for opportunities to feed their families. Even as far South as Port Elizabeth, many street corners show displays of their work, wonderful wood carvings, metal work, woven grass furniture , beaded wirework etc are all available at roadside…

Red Cross

The International Red Cross has an office in Port Elizabeth. As with many businesses around the inner city, the premises have their share of protection against crime. I thought they made quite a statement, as they appear next to this sculpture in their front courtyard, showing the work of the Red Cross in helping the sick and injured. Sort of a graphic depiction of good versus evil and all that! P.S. bc of chicago dp has given us a "you…
