Getting lost in the Redberry Maze in George

Literally for the last couple of years now the Damselfly has wanted to visit Redberry Farm in George on the Garden Route.  We just never had the opportunity to be in the area long enough to do so until we spent a long weekend in the town recently.  It meant that Redberry Farm was at the top of our "To Do" list for the weekend.  The reason for us wanting to visit Redberry Farm wasn't to actually go and pick strawberries…

Skateboarding around Port Elizabeth

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwzYy__-MDU&w=500&h=400]I'm not a skateboarder.  Fell way too hard off my skateboard trying it out as a kid.  Drama Princess loves to Jboard though.  But that's beyond the point.  Anyhow, I was looking for a video to post for this week's Video Friday post and found this one on the King's Beach Skateboarding YouTube channel.  Although it's one of their older videos it shows the guys leaving the skate-park behind and hitting the streets a bit, showing off some of Port Elizabeth's…

Paddling on the Sundays River

The Sundays River Valley and Addo is synonymous with the Addo Elephant National Park and have never really been a holiday destination unless you went to visit the Addo Park.  But this has all changed.  The Addo area is about so much more than just elephants these days.  It has actually developed into a holiday destination all on its own.  Addo and its elephants are still the big attraction, but the area around the park has also turned into an adventure and activity mecca.  Zip…

Facing my fear of heights on the Pine Lodge high ropes course

I got to face my fear of heights at Pine Lodge the other day and walked away a better man for it.  Pine Lodge not only introduced a zipline to the public, but also a new high ropes course.  The high ropes course consist of two levels with four challenges per level.. We only had time to do the bottom level which is about five meters off the ground.  To get to it you warm up on a little rickety bridge…

Ziplining at Pine Lodge

Looking for something a little different to do around Port Elizabeth this summer?  Why not try out Pine Lodge's zipline?  Even though it's been there for probably a year or two now, Pine Lodge has decided to really start pushing all the activities one can do at the resort to both in-house guests as well as locals and other visitors to the city.  The three slide zipline is located right next to the resort and is nice and easy to…

Sand sledding at Colchester

The Sundays River Ferry recently launched the newest activity to add to the area's diverse mix of  things to do.  Sand Sledding.  Sand sledding is an easier option than sand boarding as you don't have to worry about keeping your balance or falling hard.  The experience starts with a cruise down the Sundays River on the ferry before hitting the dunes.  The boards are custom made and resembles snow sleds.  The instructor shows you exactly what to do and believe me,…

Sand Sledding on the dunes at Colchester

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CGBYdFmE1c&w=500&h=400]Last week I got to check out the new sand sledding activity in Colchester.  Addo Sand Sledding is presented by The Sundays River Ferry and includes a leisurely cruise down the Sundays River towards the river mouth, a climb to the top of the dunes for the awesome view across Algoa bay back towards Port Elizabeth and then sand sledding.  Les Kingma had special sand sleds designed and made and believe you me, it is an awesome experience enjoyed by…

Where did Pollok Beach get its name?

Have you ever wondered where Pollok Beach got its name from?  For a start, it is supposed to be spelled Pollok without the "c" so it definitely wasn't named after Graham Pollock.  I found the source of the name on the Millers Local blog.  Pollok Beach was named after the Pollok Hotel that used to stand where the present Summerseas is today.  The Pollok Hotel later became the old Summerstrand Hotel which was demolished and made way for Summerseas.  The original building dated back to the 1890’s, when…
