PE Main Library

The Public Library building next to Market Square was opened in 1902. The terracotta facade was manufactured in England and shipped to Algoa Bay in numbered pieces to be reassembled on site. The statue of Queen Victoria was unveiled in 1903 and is made of Sicilian marble.

Old buildings of historical significance are my favourates. The Public Library building is stunning complemented by the statue of Queen Victoria.

It’s amazing how many buildings were made like that. We have a few churches (monasteries) here that were made in Europe and somehow found there way here.

Growing up in PE I never appreciated what a truly beautiful building the library is, and how astonoshingly… English. I know everything colonial is now frowned upon as bad and reminiscent of opression, but we have some truly beautiful heritage colonial structures in PE.
