The Diaz cross standing on Market Square is a replica of the crosses planted by Bartholomeu Diaz on his exploration journey in 1488. Diaz was the first (known) European to set foot in what is today known as South Africa. He planted a cross in Mossel Bay, on St Croix Island just off Port Elizabeth and at his turning point at Kwaaihoek near Kenton-on-Sea. This replica was donated to the city of Port Elizabeth by the Portuguese government and the stone it was made from was quarried from the same area where the stone for the original crosses came from.

nice shot and interesting history page!
Very nice angle, with the Old Post Office tower behind the cross!Louise
Did not know that, thanks for the info.
I do not have Market Square on my PE map. Also I do not recognise the tall building in the background. Can you pin-point them, please.
Market Aquare is the open area in front of the City Hall. The tall building in the background is the Old Post Office tower. I see I forgot to ad the GPS coordinates which I have now done.
I think the first time I ever saw the Dias Cross was when we went on a Sub B field trip in 1992 when I was still in Juffrou Vermeulen's class in Cunningham Primary. There was still a pool then and it was filled up with river stone the next time I saw it many years later.
