Shark Rock Pier

Shark Rock Pier has featured in many of our posts, but it has many moods, so we never tire of photographing it. This shot was taken as the sun was making her presence felt and you can see her rays catching the top of the waves, from under the pier.

Solar Eclipse

This morning we had the rare skyward event of a solar eclipse. It was something I've been looking forward to for a while, but when I got up this morning I was very disappointed to see that it was very misty. But I was hopeful. At its furthest we would have seen about a 64% eclipse and that was going to be at about 08:15. Just after eight I headed outside and the sun was starting to break through. Now…

The Boardwalk day and night

The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment complex on the Port Elizabeth beachfront is a very popular spot for both locals as well as visitors to the city. The nice part about it is that you don't have to visit the casino to visit the Boardwalk. In actual fact the complex is a very family friendly environment. Most of the shops are open in the evenings until 20:00 while the restaurants are open till late. Boardwalk by dayBoardwalk by night

I will never tire of watching the big ships being shepherded in and out of the harbour by the powerful little tugs, this was around 5am last Saturday. You can see the Port Captains watch tower in the background.

Potjiekos

When you think of traditional South African foods, a couple seems to put up their hands. But the two that must be right up there in the top three or four must be braaivleis (barbecued meat) and potjiekos (stew made in a cast iron pot on the coals as well). Familiar landmark

Taken from the same spot as yesterday's pic, this is a familiar landmark in PE. It is a beacon that was erected to mark a dangerous reef, and the position of the bell-bouy, for shipping. According to a notice posted on the gate, it is planned to construct a tea room around the beacon, and raise it by 3m. We look forward to seeing it completed, it will be a prime spot to relax and watch the sea over a…

New look Beachfront

The municipality has worked very hard to make our beachfront user friendly for all sorts of people. From this viewpoint at the bottom of Admirality Way, you can see the cycle track and raised wooden boardwalk for pedestrians. You can now walk or cycle comfortably all the way from Kings Beach to beyond this point. You can also see the new Radison hotel taking shape on the left of Marine Drive, and the Summer Seas complex which, controversially, replaced the…
