Pumba elephant

After a quick visit we were driving out of Pumba Game Reserve and passing Water Lodge when we found an elephant approaching across a field towards us.  Unfortunately for me the sun was behind him so I couldn't really get a great picture, but that doesn't matter.  He came lumbering along, looked at as pass him and then proceeded down the track towards the lodge.  Probably for breakfast.Looking back at him moseying along towards the lodge  as we were driving away

Sand River Dam

Port Elizabeth's earliest water supply came from the Shark River at Happy Valley and the Donkin Stream next to the Donkin Reserve.  As the city started to grow in its early days of development the demand for water far exceeded this meager supply.  After a competition held by the Port Elizabeth city council in 1862 to find proposals to supply the city with water, a weir and small dam was built in the Van Stadens River.  This was later followed by…

Perdemonument

Elands River Road

The Elands River Road links the Rocklands area with the Gamtoos Valley just outside Patensie.  The majority of the road is a gravel road but the route it follows through the Elands River Valley is very beautiful and well worth making a day or weekend trip out of, staying over in either of the two areas.

Forest stream cascade

Beach or Bush? Bush or Beach? That always seem to be the choice when people do these mini surveys on where folk would like to go for their holidays.  I can think of one or two others to add but one that springs to mind immediately is Forest.  What's wrong with a forest holiday? The breeze rustling in the leaves, the birds in the trees, the smell of the damp forest floor, the isolation of a forest trail, greenery all around,…

Mark’s Camp Walkway

Its Saturday afternoon and the weather is perfect in the Bay.  The EP Kings just won the Currie Cup first division, I have my fire going and a couple of t-bones are waiting to go on the coals.  What could be better?  Not much other than perhaps spending this perfect afternoon on the deck at the bottom of this walkway at Mark's Camp at Lalibela Game Reserve.

Fygies between the rocks

Vygies is a type of succulent and most of them are in full flower at the moment.  I found this little clump between the rocks in the Tsitsikamma National Park at the Storms River Rest camp.

Lighthouse renovation

The renovation project on the Cape Recife lighthouse is nearly done with the scaffolding around the lighthouse having been removed and by now the rest are probably gone as well as I took this pic about two weeks ago.  Now I'm just holding thumbs that they will allow visitors to go up the lighthouse again some time soon.

Baba spinnekoppies
