Introduction:
We have been invited by CrazyCow of Durban to participate in the city daily photo forum. Since we are passionate about Port Elizabeth, and already love sharing photos of the city on our personal blogs, it will be a delight to show others around the world what a cool place it is!
To set the scene, PE (as it is affectionately called) is a major port in Nelson Mandela Bay, on the Southern coast of South Africa, at about 33.5 degrees south.
The bay was known as Algoa Bay since the town was established here in the early 1800s, but the name was recently changed to honour our first President since true democracy. The surrounding area is called the Nelson Mandela Metropole, and encompasses the towns of Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage. As they are essentially all one city, we will cover the entire Metropole in this blog, although our main focus will be on Port Elizabeth.
And to start us off:
Here is a view of the bay, looking across to the north, from the cliffs at the side of Albany Road, which was built in one of the river gorges (we call them kloofs) which run from the hill to the sea.
This is a view across the North End area of town, mostly commercial and industrial. The domed roof in the bottom right hand corner is the old fire station, which we will feature in more detail soon.
welcome to the world of DP
Yes, welcome aboard. That masthead picture of yours really makes me look forward to the pictures to come.
Thanks Ackworth and Ham, our problem is not going to be finding photos, but choosing which ones to post, we do tend to get a bit carried away!!
I’d like to add my welcome and look forward to more photos of your city. I visited Port Elizabeth right after Mandela was elected. I have a watercolor painting I bought from the artist who was painting in one of your parks and it is hanging on my wall. Reminds me of my wonderful visits to your fair country.
welcome to this great worldwide family!greetings from Singapore!
Welcome to CDP from Richmond upon Thames Daily Photo…that’s a bit of a mouthful, but you’ll get used to it (I hope). R u T is very “bijou” and you won’t find any Grand Horizon shots, but there’s quite a lot of River Thames.
Welcome to DP, look forward to seeing more photos.
Another Welcome from Sharon, CT, USA! I hope you post larger photos so we can really see and share in your beautiful and fascinating city!
Welcome!I hoper you enjoy posting the image and equally browsing the world through the community! From Nelson, New Zealand.
Thanks everyone, this seems like a really friendly community. Kate, so glad you have been here, the photos will mean more to you. Jenny, i don’t know why they are so small, I uploaded as large! It might be because it is a wide panoramic and blogger reduced it for the screen, or perhaps i must save them bigger, how many pixels of width do you save them as? And please could someone help me to set up the drop down list of blogs on my sidebar, I can’t seem to get it right! Thanks
