A little caching adventure in Uitenhage brought us to Cannon Hill overlooking the town. Walking back down the path Drama Princess gave a bit of a scream and jumped onto the grass. There on the path was a couple of seriously big ants making their way up the hill. I tried to get a close up but wasn't going to mess with this guys.
I am amazed at the places I have discovered while out Geocaching. One of my recent discoveries is the Evangelical Mission Church in Uitenhage. Approaching down the road I didn't realize the corrugated iron building was a church until I stopped, had a good look and noticed the roof lantern. The Cape Dutch style Drostdy building in Uitenhage was completed in 1809 during the time that General Jacob Glen Cuyler was the Landdrost of Uitenhage. The building houses the town's Africana museum following the historical development of Uitenhage and the surrounding districts. The museum contains various exhibits which include historical artifacts from the town, toys, porcelain, clothing and an archive library.
I don't get to go to Uitenhage that often. Don't always have a reason to go but if I do and have somebody with me who hasn't been there before, I like to stop by Canon Hill to show them the view of the town.
Port Elizabeth is fortunate to have quite a lot of Geocaches to keep the local cachers, specially newbies, nice and busy. Uitenhage unfortunately hasn't been that fortunate until recently. https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/R6CGuUYeQsQ&source=udsUitenhage isn't really seen as a tourist destination yet it has a couple of fantastic attractions like the VW AutoPavilion, VW factory tour, Hinterveld Mohair Mill Tour, the NMB Science and Technology Centre, the Uitenhage Museums and a number of monuments and memorials. Last year SABC 2 program Pasella visited Uitenhage and did this insert on the town.
The best view point in Uitenhage is probably Cannon Hill with view both to the south and east. The park on Cannon Hill has to coronation memorials, one for Queen Elizabeth II and one for King George V. There is also a cannon on the hill pointing south and this along with the name makes me think that the hill was used as a lookout and potential defense point for the town at some stage in its history.
The Hinterveld mohair weaving mill in Uitenhage produces mohair blankets and other products for retail all over the world. Who would ever have thought that Uitenhage would play on major fashion platforms but when you see the products produced there you would not be surprised.
The Hinterveld Mohair Mill Tour in Uitenhage is not your normal run of the mill (excuse the pun) tour, but visitors go there expecting one thing and leaving with a whole different impression. The factory is also heaven for photographers with so many interesting objects and angles like this one of all the colourful mohair yarn strands going into the weaving machine, turning it into exquisite blankets.
