Going nowhere slowly

Just west of Patensie, travellers through the Gamtoos Valley will find the Padlangs farm stall.  It's a favourite with both visitors and the locals and I really have to do a post on it one day, but that day is not today.  Outside the farm stall visitors would find the remnants of transport methods used in the valley in the past.  Parts of an ox wagon and an old bakkie (a Chev perhaps?) I placed a couple of Geocaches in the…

Bus station mural

The Bus Station Mural by 4 Blind Mice which forms part of Route 67 is probably the one piece which I would love to have seen somewhere else.  Not because I think that it doesn't fit perfectly in the bus station, but because I would love more people to see it.  Its colourful and vibrant and I absolutely love it for that.  The mural celebrates public transport and the daily journeys undertaken by the people of the city.

Sunnyside Station

Geocaching is taking me to all kinds of places I haven't been to before.  And here I was thinking I've been everywhere. This specific Grannynasty cache took me a bit off the beaten track along a dirt road just west of the Van Stadens Bridge to the old Sunnyside Station, 29 1/2 miles from Port Elizabeth.  The station is on the narrow gauge railway line that runs from Port Elizabeth all the way to Avontuur in the Langkloof.  The line which used…

Roadhouse Garage

The VW AutoPavilion is an absolute heaven for any car fanatic with some great Volkswagen related exhibits covering the whole history of VW.  Outside the front entrance of the museum is a roadhouse and garage that may take some people back in time a little bit.  But so will most of the exhibits inside the museum as well.

Inside the bus

Towards the end of 2012 the city's Integrated Public Transport Service was finally ready to go operational and started running on the first routes to be implemented.  I got to go on one of Port Elizabeth's ITPS buses for the first time this week and just couldn't help snapping a pic of the inside of the bus. Wouldn't have tried it during peak hour with a full bus though.  Now if only the area I live in would be included on a…

Pink plane

On the road to Morgan Bay on the southern Wild Coast you may just spot one of the most unusual and unexpected sights anywhere along a road in the province.  A huge pink plane parked next to the road.   The Convair 880, named Eish Airlines, belongs to Billy Nell, former Finance MEC of the Eastern Cape provincial government and stand son Morganville Farm.  Nell had the plane towed to the farm from Bisho airport and now forms part of his collection of old bikes,…

Vintage cars

A little while ago the team from SABC 2 show Pasella was in Port Elizabeth to shoot a couple of stories, one involving vintage cars.  Here the cars used for the insert are lined up at one of the lookout spots along Marine Drive.  This specific insert will be aired on 21 November on SABC 2 between 19:30 and 20:30 some time. Watch the insert on YouTube

Old cars under threat

The St Croix Motor Museum in Port Elizabeth has one of the most magnificent private collections of classic and vintage cars in South Africa.  Unfortunately this museum is under threat of closing due to the fact that the government department that owns the property doesn't want to renew the museum's lease.  The owner of the museum, Eben de Vos, is a very worried man right now as there isn't another suitable site for him to move his collection of over 60 cars to with enough space…

Beetles galore

If you are into cars then the VW AutoPavilion is just the place for you.  The museum is state of the art and a superb representation of everything Volswagen.  On display is everything from actual cars to driver simulators, engine parts right through to the detailed history of VW.  Visitor can also book tours through the VW factory next door to the museum, but I have to be honest here.  I've never been on the factory tour so I can't really comment in it.  I…
